About Louis
I have studied Japanese for over a decade and started teaching in 2013. I have a unique perspective of the challenges that a English-language speaker will face in learning Japanese.
I have been there. I have gone through it. I have multiple certifications in Japanese language. And I can teach you the bridges to get from confusion to comprehension.
We both learn. No matter how times I teach this topic, there is always a new piece of nuance that I obtain because every student is different. I can then use this new angle discovered while teaching verb conjugations to help another student.
I also love kanji deeply. There is a story within each character and that story changes based on context. It is a lifetime study and well worth the effort!
It is a great story that I will save for our first lesson!

This is a comprehensive Japanese class, so you will learn Reading & Writing & Conversation. We will learn kana (hiragana & katakana) and kanji. We will also go over natural speech patterns to make your Japanese actually sound Japanese, a specialty of mine!
ONLINE or IN-PERSON: You can come to my home in Queens or my office in midtown Manhattan. Or we can have online lessons. I can even come to your home, depending on location. Your choice! *Due to the coronavirus pandemic, online lessons are heavily preferred.*
CLASS MATERIALS: 2 textbooks (Minna No Nihongo Book 1 & Minna No Nihongo Book 1 Translation) & the Skritter app for iPhone/Android facilitate more comfortable studying.
HOMEWORK: There is a shared Google doc for students and you can input your homework at your leisure. Please get it done BEFORE class starts!
#1 TIP FOR THE MOST EFFECTIVE LEARNING: Patience! Language learning is a process and everybody's process is a little bit different. Don't expect to magically understand everything perfectly the first time you are exposed to it in a lesson. Some concepts will come to you immediately after I teach the lesson and no further explanation will be required. Other concepts might take a few weeks of practical application and referring to multiple resources and perspectives before you get that "ah-ha!" moment. Nobody is to blame, especially yourself. Know that the language is coming and every day, you are getting better. Like working out at the gym. You won't see the change in yourself but in a few months, others will see the change in you and suddenly, you are transformed.

Find out what resources a teacher is using to teach their students. Textbook choice is important.
Also, ask the teacher about their main intent. Do they want to teach Japanese or keep students? My intent is to teach Japanese. In the rare event that I do not see that a student is progressing, I will say something. I would rather risk losing a student than risk having them lose interest in Japanese altogether!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would rather that students come to me freely than feel restrained.
Students that keep the lines of communication open are less likely to hit a wall because we will know the problem areas. Whittling down the problem areas as they come up helps avoid getting blocked later on.
