About Laura
If you are having a difficult learning curve and feeling like you just can't master beginning Japanese, I can definitely give you the skills and encouragement you need to take off on your journey. Ultimately, it is up to you, but I can help you to learn to love the climb. I moved to Japan when I was 12 and fell in love with Japan, the Japanese language, culture and people. I ended up continuing my journey and studied Japanese in college and eventually became a high school Japanese language teacher, for over 20 years. I know how to make it fun and get you to the point that you can confidently take over the reigns yourself.
I enjoy watching students light up when they learn something new and are able to communicate in Japanese.
I have tutored ESL students in Japan over many years, and enjoy the interaction. I can teach individuals or small groups.
If you need help with getting organized in general with your classes and figuring out how to make the most of your educational experience, I can definitely help you with that. I know how to show you the best ways to study and how to decipher what your teachers expect. It will make school so much easier and even enjoyable for you.
I started as an emergency hire teacher, and loved it so much I went back to college to get my teaching credentials.
I have a master's degree in Japanese Studies from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in Japanese pedagogy. I have taught high school and community college level Japanese for over 20 years. I attended the summer Japanese program at Middlebury College in Vermont after my undergraduate studies, and have lived in Japan, off and on from ages 12 to 60.

I’m writing on behalf of Laura Bogen, who is applying as a tutor for Japanese. Laura was my colleague in the Foreign Languages Department at Kadena High School, Okinawa, Japan for 8 years. She is competent in her Japanese language and cultural knowledge skills, and is a very creative, dedicated teacher who always does her best for her students. She is gentle and kind and a wonderful person with whom to work and collaborate. It is a pleasure for me to endorse her application.
Bogen-sensei is a top-notch instructor, with decades of experience teaching Japanese. I’ve worked collaboratively with her as a high school Japanese teacher since 2008. She knows how to make her lessons relatable, enjoyable, and effective for learners of all backgrounds. You won’t be disappointed!
I was a former student and she did a great job teaching Japanese- I learned a lot from her and her studying tips were helpful
Was very patient and always made the lesson more fun. Definitely will have to reach out again!
Bogen-sensei is a very patient and engaging tutor! Her knowledge of Japanese pedagogy and experience living in Japan make her lessons very interesting, authentic and fun. She can also teach you colloquial Japanese beyond what you'd find in textbooks, making it more exciting to apply in practical situations.
she is truly a great teacher in japanese. she loves japaneae culture so not only you get the great tutor in japanese but she will tell you all about the fastnating japanese culture. she also understands that for westerners, the language can be intimidating so she won't bore you with all these grammar rules of japanese. she is fun and she is passionate about japanse. you will not regret being tutored by her.
