About Thomas
Expereinced independent school teacher with expertise is several academic disciplines. 25 years experience. Currently retired
Winner of teaching awards from Indiana Univeristy, the Templeton Foundation, and the Lawrenceville School.
MA in History and Religious Studies
Courses taught range from standard world history to AP World History to IB History. I taught seminars in American Social History and Religion in America. Courses in Religious Studies ranged from introduction to seminars on Islam or Hiduism or the Gospels.
Teaching was a career that allowed me to have a life of reading and conversations about big ideas and the sweep of history.
Working with students on study skills and learning is central to the vocation of an indepedent school teacher. For the last 15 years I was involved with school that utilized a pedagogy called Harkness that focused on students centered learning. This demands first listening and then helping students articulate their undestanding. I was lucky enough to work at a school with a distinct Teaching and Learning Center that helped the faculty develop study skill and learning technigues for students.
