About Zachary
Hi, I'm Zach Newkirk, I'm a college student in Raliegh, NC. I've been working for years to become a history teacher in higher education. Up to this point, I have studied a total of six college courses including American history, World history and European history over multiple sections. I have previously taught a few middle and high school homeschool classes both as an teacher and an assistant. I've worked with professors in multiple social sciences and have a well rounded knowledge of all major time periods of human history with an emphasis on American history as well as midevil and renessance era history. For the majority of my life I've known that I wanted to teach, I know what it's like to have good and bad history teachers and I also know that a good history tutor can turn the most boring and mundane subjects into a fascinating, all-incompassing world of stories of heroes and villains, religion and science, war and peace and so much more. If you need someone to help invigorate and encourage you or your student to find passion in history and to find new ways to learn and retain information then I am happy to help.
I love helping students understand and become excited about the content that lies within history and social studies. These topic can be very boring if taught in the wrong way but the way I see it history is just a collection of stories based on facts but with just as much magic as your favorite fairytale.
I started teaching when I was 16 as an assistant in a homeschool group I formerly attended. Through my lectures, the teacher's assistants who hired a professional freelance teacher for the course, found that I knew more information and lectured in a more consolidated manner. So, the next semester instead of rehiring the teacher they offered for me to volunteer as a teacher for American history 1 for a 9th grade group of kids. Beyond that I have been providing history tutoring to my family and friends for years and have gained a lot of insight into how to work with kids whether they are interested in the content or not.
As a college student, I don't have much practical work experience however, I have spent a lot of time working on my craft. I formally taught American history, AP American History and World history as either a techer or a lecturing assistant. Further I have emmense political experience from my time in highschool. Where I was a participant as a governor's page as well as serving as a Senatorial page in the NC house of representitives. Along with four years of active participation in mock trial club and debate club. And of course I am about half way to obtaining a bachelors degree in history. Meaning, I have taken and passed at least six college courses pertaining to all the history I will teach as well as political science, american government, sociology and english.

My first step for working with a new student is to go over the content they are using and gather information about the topics and information the student is working with.
Next, I adress the students learning process. I'll ask questions, go over notes and overall get to know your student and how they learn and use information both in and out of the course itself.
Finally, I'll create a plan that is mutually decided by myself and the student or the parent of said student to adapt or supliment the students learning curve. I try to do all of my work in a way that is focused on the student and what they need to succeed.
I've worked with students individually for every grade between 5th and 10th and have taught as a teacher or assistant for 8th, 9th and 10th grade.
When hiring a teacher you need to make sure your not trading the attention you need for the quality of teacher your hiring. If you want to hire a veteran teacher with years of experience and education, then you will most assuredly be competing with dozens of other students for your tutors time. Whereas in my case, your taking a bigger risk knowing that I have limited experience but one thing you'll never worry about is my commitment to helping you succeed whether that means going over my time without charging or moving my schedule to help you prepare for a test, whatever the case, I will have your back.
I am fond of when I recently watched the Hamilton musical on Disney +. The show's historical accuracy along with it's mixture of modern musical influence meant that it was entertaining while being true to the story of one of the founding fathers of America.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what you want to achive from our sessions. Do you want to pass a test? A whole class? A whole group of classes? Do you want supplimentary information or help writing a paper? Lay out in your head how you want me to help you so that we can get you to where you need to be as efficently as possible. Your hiring me so that one day, you won't need me!

Details
Since I don't have much practical work experience my price is set at 15$/hr. However, if you decide your student needs more attention and need to work out multiple sessions per week I am willing to work out a solution that benifits the customer as much as possible.
