About Colleen (Shula)

My training and teaching style is deeply rooted in the Renie/Grandjany tradition of relaxation. Each of my students, from beginners to advanced, develop technique that is strong yet graceful, and built for the lifelong enjoyment of playing the harp. I will also teach you how to practice efficiently, effectively, and in a way that makes practice interesting and absorbing. From this firm foundation, students can confidently explore any area of the repertoire: classical, folk, jazz, pop, sacred music or original material. I also emphasize theory and musicality, teach improvisation, and am a vocal coach.
My personal teaching style is warm and supportive. I will set challenges before you, but only those you will be able to accomplish with just the right balance of work and fun!
Mlle. Renie also wrote, "The basis of the instruction is the same, but the form differs for each." I love helping each student develop their own style, in accordance with their unique gifts, talents and interests!
My musical education, performance and teaching background is extensive.
I have been a professional musician since 1980, when I founded the Reverie Flute and Harp Duo. I have also been teaching harp and piano rpivately since that time. I am also a trained cantor (liturgical singer).
I have been blessed to be able to study with several fine harpists, including Mildred Dilling, Elaine Humphries, Anne Adams (SF Opera Orchestra), John Fuller (Sacramento Symphony), and Laura Zaerr (University of Oregon).
Formal education includes study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, CSU Sacramento, and Mills College (BA);
Graduate studies at Graduate Theological Union (MA) and San Francisco Theological Seminary (D.Min.).

About the lesson

At our first lesson, we'll spend a little time talking about your musical background: how you becoame interested in playing the harp; previous teachers and classes; you play or have studied; and most importantly, your current interests and goals. If you already have some experience playing the harp, I'll ask you to bring all your music and method books with you, and you'll have the opportunity to play a few pieces.
If you are new to the harp, we will start right away learning the basics of this magical instrument.
You will always leave each lesson with clear and do-able assignments, so that you can feel the joy of progress, and return the following week with a genuine sense of accomplishment.
