About Joshua

Hey I'm Josh I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves sharing my knowledge with students and seeing them grow while I learn and grow from them. I have been playing guitar for almost 20 years graduating in 2011 from The Ohio State University in Jazz Guitar Performance. I have been teaching guitar to young and old begginer to advanced students for the last 10 years. I also taught at a music store for 5 years to many talented students that went on to play in bands, go to music school, perform and write their own music. While Ohio State I studied with Tim Cummiskey and was involved in various jazz combos and was apart of the Ohio State jazz ensemble. Since graduating I have performed/toured locally and nationally opening up for The Wailers, Grammy Nominated R & B artist Kelly Price, The Dirty Heads, Badfish, Ballyhoo, Mariachi El Bronx, Tarrus Riley, Mike Love, Passafire, Bud Gaugh of Sublime and performing at places such as SXSW, Nelson Ledges, HOB Chicago, Stubbs, The Norva, LC pavillion, Newport, . Performed with groups Shrub, Urban Tropic, Talisha Holmes ensemble, George Barrie Band My discography includes: ● Talisha Holmes , "Follow" (EP) ● Shrub , "Highceratops" ●Urban Tropic “self titled” EP

Methods used:

I approach every student differently based on skill level and interest, but I have consistent methods that I have developed over the years that I use. For beginners I start off by showing them how to strum, hold a pick, use the left and right hand, simple open chords and will have them typically, but not always buy a beginner guitar book. I recommend Instant Guitar by Berklee guitar professor Tomo Fujita. For my intermediate to advanced students I show them jazz and some classical techniques and concepts; improvisation, chord voicing, stylistic approaches, technique, feel, composing, ear training and music theory. I recommend my advanced students getting Berklee Press Modern method for guitar volumes 1 2 3 by William Levitt. I have students of all levels bring in songs that they are interested in learning. I believe this is key and helps keep the students interest and to me is so important with learning to play music. Also note you do not have to buy these books as I can supply and make copies of various things that I feel you as a student will benefit from, I own a library of guitar and music books.

Style used:

I strongly believe everyone learns differently and at their own pace. While my whole focus is to engage the student and keep it fun I stress the importance of daily practice. I totally understand that not everyone is trying to be the best guitar player or become a musician and everyone has their own life and schedule, but I believe a lot can be learned thru self discipline and learning to play an instrument. I encourage and have students set realistic goals that we can work towards together. Something that I have tailored to recently is having students perform in front of a an audience at a real venue where music is performed.

I love that every student is different that comes in, everyone has their own voice and I love seeing the students grow into that voice with the tools that I give them. I also like that I learn from my students as well, because I believe everyone has their own way of doing something and while I am the teacher they might strike an idea, or make me think of something in a different way or approach that I might have not thought of. I like seeing that "aha" moment in the students faces when they start to connect the dots with the instrument. Seeing the overall growth that student has is also very inspiring as a teacher. Like anything that you work at and practice you will see results and it's really cool to see that with my students.

I have been teaching for the last 10 years to students of all kinds, young and old, begginer to advanced. I taught at a music store for 5 years in which many of my students went on to perform in bands, write their own music, audition and get accepted into music school, or just simply jam with friends and family.

I have worked with students of all kinds from young children to older adults, begginer to advanced. From young children learning simple kid songs to teenagers wanting to learn Led Zepplin and Rush to adults wanting to just learn simple folk songs. I have helped students get accepted in to music school as well as perform locally or at their youth church.
