About Sharla
MUSIC
Because I have worked for many years as a musician, song-writer, and teacher, I am uniquely poised to take musical concepts and find the best way to break them down for students. I enjoy teaching and I enjoy getting to know my students and helping them achieve their goals.
LANGUAGE TUTORING
I started out teaching writing to college students and then became an elementary teacher with a specialization in Language Arts. I also taught ESL in the Czech republic as well as online for many years. and I have my TEFL certificate. These experiences have shown me the reading and writing process across every stage of development, from the earliest readers and English learners to University-level writers. I especially enjoy working with ESL learners and early or struggling readers. I have a lot of experience working with kids with LDs around reading, and I use many Wilson and Orton Gillingham methods.
I believe masterful language broadens and deepens our connections to other humans in important ways. And I believe in empowering my students so that they feel, not only capable, but joyfully masterful in their use of English.
My favorite part of teaching is learning what makes each student tick, what they love, how they learn. We play! We have fun! And we figure out together how to get the most out of practice time to meet that student's learning objectives.
I've been teaching since I was myself a high school student! My first job was teaching toddler gymnastics, and in high school I helped teach drama classes at the children's theatre where I took classes. Teaching music lessons is a natural offshoot of my life as a musician and classroom teacher.
I am a liscensed Music Together teacher. I've been teaching elementary and middle-school-aged students language arts, music and ESL for 25 years. I have a BA in English/Creative Writing and an MFA in Creative Writing.

During our first lesson, we talk about the student's goals. We set out a few specific, measureable goals and a loose timetable.
For music, I always ask new students to bring a song or two that they would like to learn. Then we dive right in! Playing an instrument is about 20% brain work and 80% muscle memory. We learn by doing.
For ESL, I do an assessment to figure out where the student is in their learning process, and then we make a plan to maximize learning. I love teaching ESL online because I’ve mastered the use of the camera to keep things interesting and fun. Of course, this is all geared to the students’ age and level.
For music, I've worked with babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers with their parents and caretakers. I've worked with elementary-aged students -- absolute beginners -- learning guitar and ukulele. And I have worked with older students and adults who already have playing experience to expand their repetoires, music knowledge, strums and strokes, and chord vocabularies.
For language learning, I have worked with all ages. I especially love working with ESL students and early or struggling readers.
The only way to learn a musical instrument is to actually play it. Learning to play music is 20% brainpower and 80% muscle memory. The most important thing you can do is put your hands on your instrument every day!
Since moving to Chattanooga, I'm very fond of Nightfall. I love the variety of music and the happy vibes downtown! I also love the Three Sisters Bluegrass Festival and music festivals in general.

Perfect! Sharla June is very nice and pays very close attention to her students! She also takes interest in what kind of music you like so you can learn songs you enjoy. I would recommend Sharla June to any beginners or anyone looking to expand their skill set in music!
Perfect! Sharla is great at assessing where you are and what you want to do, then takes it from there. If your goal is to make music while having fun, she’s the best!
Perfect! I just had my third lesson with Sharla and she has already taught me so much. I picked up the guitar as a quarantine hobby and tried to teach myself basic chords, but lacked basic knowledge. Sharla is very knowledgeable and able to break down the basics as well as teach fun new things with the guitar. I enjoy every class and look forward to the next one!
Perfect! Sharla June is extremely good with kids. She’s made my niece feel very comfortable. Sharla June has made her believe that she can learn to play the guitar. Hiring Sharla June is definitely a good decision. I highly recommend her as a teacher.

Sharla June is personable and has done a beautiful job of connecting with my daughter in guitar lessons. Not only has my daughter’s guitar playing expanded, but she also has another trusted adult who sees and cares about her. I’m grateful for Sharla’s support.
I started taking lessons with Sharla in 5th grade. I took lessons with her for three years. These lessons included solid rhythm guitar, singing and playing at the same time (which is harder than Sharla makes it look), and singing lead and harmony across a variety of genres. Sharla was the first step on my musical journey, and I couldn't have had asked for a better first teacher. Sharla has a wonderful way of breaking down even complicated musical concepts and techniques, like barre chords or harmony, and making them approachable. Her one-of-a-kind passion for music, her truly infectious spunk, her wealth of knowledge from years and years of performing, and her natural ability to teach made every second of every lesson enjoyable. Even when I was frustrated with a skill, more often than not, she found a way to make that 30 minutes worth it. And, what's more, she knows how to make you a better musician and have fun with you at the same time. You inevitably have to practice on your own under any music teacher, but Sharla really knows how to balance work and play. She is a master at setting goals and holding you to them, but she also knows the value of letting loose and just simply rocking out. I do not remember an incredible amount of specifics from my middle school days, but it is safe to say that if nothing else, Sharla instilled a love of creating music in me unlike any other and became a life-long friend in the process. If you are looking for a new teacher, please consider Sharla June. You'll be glad you did.
My daughter took guitar lessons from Sharla for several years. And though she learned how to play the guitar beautifully, she learned so much more than that! She learned to sing beautiful harmony and to appreciate many different genres of music. I appreciated Sharla's approach to teaching, which was not overly book-based. Children pick up the theory and other aspects of learning music so much more quickly when they know how and love to play.

Sharla is a wonderful teacher!Sharla was fun a personable! We were still able to have quality lessons virtually when meeting in-person wasn’t a good idea.Sharla based her lessons to the interest of my son.
My daughter has learned how to play the ukulele through Sharla’s thorough instruction. Sharla not only teaches them the technical chords, but also music theory and rhythm lessons. She is a calm, patient instructor and you can tell she genuinely enjoys teaching her students and the time she has with them. She makes learning the songs fun! My daughter enjoys picking out music and learning songs she is interested in. I love the different genres of music my daughter gets exposed to through these lessons. We have been taking them for over year and could not be more pleased. She looks forward to her time with Sharla every week.
Sharla treated my daughter with an awesome level of care. She looked for music that my daughter was interested in. She helped her gain confidence to sing and play. Sharla is a great teacher of many subjects!
