About Ken
I focus on making golf easier to understand, easier to play and more fun. I believe there is a place in golf for technology but feedback I've received over the last 20 years tells me that straight forward communication, demonstration and visual cues are much more effective in improving an individual's golf game. These fundamental ideas are the basis of my teaching and I find them to be effective for nearly every golfer.
I love meeting people and golfers of all skill levels. There is nothing better as a coach than making someone's day through improving their golf game. Relationships made through teaching often last a lifetime and many of my friends were once my students. Golf is the best game in the world and this is one of the reasons.
I have worked at golf courses in one capacity or another since I was 13 years old, beginning at the sadly now defunct Wakefield Valley Golf Course in Westminster. I began teaching my 6 year old brother shortly after and have been enjoying it ever since.
While working full time as a golf professional from 1998-2016, I completed the Professional Golfers Association apprenticeship program and received my PGA Class A certification in 2008. In my career as a PGA Professional I taught hundreds of golfers of all ages (4-94), genders and skill levels. I have enjoyed working with small groups as well through junior clinics, beginners clinics and multiple ladies programs.

I spend a few minutes prior to the lesson getting to know the student's golf history. I want to know their perceptions about how the swing works, where they perceive their deficiencies/strengths and then we work together to lay out a game plan to improve. It is vital at this point that there is a communication of the short and long term goals of the student, the time frame needed and the practice time needed to affect change.
I will then allow the student to hit several shots (depending on the type of lesson) and decide what the issues are and how they compare to the student's perceptions. We will come to an understanding of what the issues are and how changes will effect the student's game for the better.
We then spend the large majority of the hour beginning clear, simple instruction focused on visual cues, consistent set-up fundamentals and when needed, demonstration.
Any and all.
Beware of instructors who rely on endless technology strategies to teach a game that can be made so much easier to understand through good verbal and visual communication.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Will I have time to practice the changes between lessons? It's important for students to be honest about how much time they are going to have for practice between lessons. Like anything in life, you have to exhaustively practice good technique before real improvement will take shape. There are very few quick fixes in golf. It takes dedication to change to see results.
When speaking with teachers, don't fall victim to doing too much, too quickly. One lesson after the other enriches the teacher, not the student. Make sure the teacher has a realistic game plan for you that meets your goals.

Perfect! Ken Shaw was personable, knowledgeable, and invested in helping me improve. He took the time to listen to my thoughts on my swing and incorporated what I knew into his instruction so I could increase my knowledge.
We finished our full swing work in less than an hour so Mr. Shaw offered to work on short game too.
Working with Ken Shaw was worth the time and money.View more reviews
