About Karen
In my experience as a reading and writing tutor, I have worked with hundreds of students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and academic backgrounds. Embedded in college writing classes, I supported students alongside professors in business, history, nutrition, and women's and gender studies.
While this experience seems broad and farreaching, I take a very individualized approach to tutoring. Our methods and pace will be informed by your learning style and we will set clear goals to monitor progress. It is also important to me that we build skills that lead to independent learning. Feedback on one assignment is fine, but I like to introduce tools that you can confidently apply to a wide range of projects.
When someone shares their writing or learning process with me I am honored. I do not think it's easy to present work that is in progress, especially when we are bombarded by idealized and polished representations of normal life all of the time. It's gratifying for me to share the tools and strategies I have for working with all kinds of writing assignments, reading goals, and presentations. Most of all, I enjoy creating a personalized learning environment where you can be productively challenged during the session and confident to continue your work once we're finished.
I was a tutor at San Francisco State University for a year and a half during which I worked with hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students at every stage of the writing process. Part of my role included fellowships with writing courses in business, history, nutrition, and women's and gender studies. In these fellowships, I served as an embedded tutor and worked with instructors to deliver personalized writing and researching support to students.
My training included working with disabilities specialists, and familiarizing myself with diverse student needs and academic backgrounds.
Apart from this direct experience, I earned a master's degree in comparative literature and edited a university literary journal. Through these experiences, I have developed strategies for tackling every aspect of the writing process from brainstorming and idea generation to paragraph organization and editing.
You may be reading this and thinking, "Great, she can talk to the collegiate crowd, but what about my K-12 writer?" While my most recent tutoring experience is with college students, I worked for years with kids of all ages as a summer camp leader, afterschool reading buddy, and nanny. I enjoy finding ways to make lessons relevant and accessible to students at any level.

When we begin, I like to hear what the student's goals are in seeking tutoring. These goals can pertain to the completion of a specific project or be more overarching like improving their grammar or the persuasiveness of their writing. We can also address any accessibility needs or preferences that relate to the student's learning style to make sure the sessions are structured in a way that suits the student best.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Especially in reading and writing, it can be difficult to sort through and diagnose your own issues. It is okay if you are unsure about why you would like help. Even if you don't think you need to drastically improve your writing, working with an experienced writer can encourage you to develop your unique voice and challenge you to deepen your engagement with the material.
This is all to say, a good tutor can help you ask stronger questions that might lead you to more productive conclusions. Come as you are and we'll move forward from there.
