About Michael
I am a professional editor, and from my own experience, schools do a really bad job of picking books that will get children excited about reading. Once decisions are made about reading materials, the results are usually dry books that won't upset any parents and will appeal to as many children as possible. These tactics do help most children learn to read and write well enough. But what about children who struggle? They need a more personal approach.
The best way to help these children learn is to appeal to what they already enjoy. Do they like watching anime and cartoons? Graphic novels might be great for them. Are they really interested in reality TV? Magazines might be able to hold their interest. If all else fails, can you get them to watch their favorite movies and shows with subtitles and work through new words with them that were on the screen? I'll find the best way to get them reading and writing more.
I have over six years of experience as a professional editor. I started my career with Scholastic and have worked with several companies since then. I currently work part-time for the American Chemical Society.

I recently worked with a student with ADHD, and I was able to help him find some books he was interested in. I also helped him write a story based on his interests. I would like to continue helping children discover their favorite books.
