About Brittney

From A young age of 7, born in Florence, Italy, English has been my favorite subject in school. I have always excelled in writing and reading; known by all teachers I encountered to have been ahead of my reading grade level. Any and all English courses I've encountered, I've passed with no less than a B+/A+ maximum. Prior to returning to tutoring, I've tutored at a previously attended university, CUNY York College in Jamaica, NY for their TRIO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES for 8 months in English as a Second Language (ESL) and Grammar as well as proof reading and sentence structure are things I proudly specialize in. After my 8 months, I briefly tutored in College Algebra and took a course in Fiction Writing in the college I am graduating in, CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice. During this time, I have tutored for approximately a little over a year. In my spare time, I focus on writing a book that originally was based on a fan fiction for a popular video game called Kingdom Hearts. I am a former member of Poetry club as well, because writing and English as a whole isn't just a subject I am passionate about but at my core, it is me! Assisting others I'm something I am passionate about is just another plus for me.

I think it has to be the fact that I am helping someone else learn not just the subject but hopefully teaching them how to and why to love English as much as I do. Looking past the gruesome writing of essays and the systematic approach schools put in place which often puts a damper on the creative side of English; there's a world of unlimited and beautiful imagination that starts with you. Getting to help blossom that aspect within each individual I get to speak with or help improve provides me with a satisfying feeling. It's also getting to work closely with others in general to help them get over something that may be mind boggling for them or might constantly be a struggle that just does something great for me. I've worked with the public in customer service for 6 years and in management for 1 year. There's no greater feeling than being help to ease someone else's troubles the way you know how!

Funny because I'm not sure when it happened but I always found myself in leadership positions that required me to show someone how to do something or to explain things that they may have not completely understand. I ended up volunteering at my old college campus before I transferred out as a tutor for English predominantly and it's been like that ever since!

I have taken numerous English Courses including introductory courses and Fiction/Creative writing course. I am also a former member of Girls Write Now where we were mentored and required to produce different types of writing pieces. This varied from memoir pieces, to poetry, to short story pieces, playwriting and more (2009/2010)

When I first work with a new student, I try to assess where their difficulties lie. I look for a pattern or interconnection of difficulties. So I let them talk to me, give me examples of things they have had repeated difficulty with and allow them to vocalize why they may or may not be frustrated about it and their expectation for me as their tutors. I believe this allows us to develop a strong foundation and trusting relationship with one another.

I have worked with students who are apart of the ESL community and students who just are not strong in Writing or expression forms that require writing and conveying thoughts, opinions, research and outlook.

Don't be shy! Even if I'm tutoring you or teaching you, we are learning together! Think of me as your classmate that is a little ahead of you and just trying to catch you up to what you missed. Most importantly, HAVE FUN! Learning can be a hard and terrible experience if you're not having fun! Bring your best game face! And I'll meet you half way! :D

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves what it is that they constantly struggle with. Is it hard for you to express your thoughts effectively? Is it hard to structure your sentences to make sense? Students should also think about why they feel like it's a hurdle to them. They should ask themselves what the desired outcome after all this tutoring, is for them. What would they like to see happen? What do they expect from me is also something to think about!

Not necessarily. I offer the lowest price to start with because I don't want the tutee to feel like they invested too much money in me and they're not getting what they want. So I try to start low and if they're happy, I transition into my constant rate. I try to charge for the quality of my work and it's negotiable. I keep an open mind because I know money is tight with everyone is some way.
