About Pratiti

I have been tutoring English reading, writing & grammar to all levels and ages for over 10 years now. I am also certified to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL), which allows me to cover basics with both English speakers and non-English speakers in an effective way. I have an MBA, which involved very heavy writing at a graduate school level, and so it is easy for me to assist any age group with writing.

I am passionate about languages (I speak 5), and writing is my biggest passion. One of these languages is French, in which I am certified at C1 (fluent). I have loved the French language & literature since I started learning it in high school, so much so that I majored in French Language & Literature at UC Irvine for my undergraduate studies. I visit France at least once a year, and I still have close friends there with whom I speak often. I read in French constantly, and in this way, have been able to retain my knowledge in French.

I am able to deconstruct learning techniques and always focus on learning how my students learn so as to best help them. By doing this, I have been able to turn failing students into A & B students. I am always punctual, and since this is a passion of mine, I ensure I do my very best to see my students succeed.

As mentioned before, languages and writing are a passion of mine. I enjoy seeing my students progress; more so when they are able to see their own progress. This is a great motivator, and I have always found that seeing progress helps a student feel more motivated to keep doing better. I love finding creative ways to teach my students and I learn a lot from the mix of personalities and ages that I teach.

I started teaching in high school; I would stay after school to tutor other students and found this to be extremely enjoyable. I continued helping people in college, and even tutored on the side when my course load wasn't too heavy. I have continued tutoring as a passion of mine over the years.

In undergraduate, I majored in French Language & Literature, which helped me understand grammar essentials. Since English is my native language, until I took another language I was unable to see what basic grammar structures and parts of speech looked like broken down. This knowledge has helped me greatly in breaking down the various parts of the English language and teach it in a way that helps students retain the information. I then moved on to pursuing my MBA at UC Irvine, which I received in 2016. I had practice writing essays at a graduate level, which helped me improve my writing and pursue different styles of writing based on the assignment. My tutoring experience since high school has also been very helpful because I have worked with a variety of students for a long time. Finally, my recent TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) course, in which I am now certified, broke down English grammar and provided lots of invaluabe learning techniques that I can use to not only ensure students learn, but that they enjoy the learning process and are motivated to do so.

I use the first lesson to do some practice exercises so that I can learn where my student needs to grow. I also spend time analyzing a free-form essay so that I can assess things like structure, grammar, and vocabulary. The next session is usually spent with a lesson plan I have prepared (unless the student has specific papers or homework to cover), and this allows me to experiment with different learning styles. Once this lesson is done, I am able to see which information stuck, which in turn tells me which learning technique the student absorbs the most. I then use that learning technique for future lessons, ensuring a change at any point where I feel like the student has plateaud and/ or is not learning like they used to. I reassess the student often to ensure the lesson plans are helping and that the student is growing.

I have worked with students ranging from age 10 all the way up to students in graduate school who need help with essays. I have worked with students who have ADHD and students who do not. I have a wide range of experience in different personality types as well.

I would advise a student to carefully examine the tutor in the first session. Are they able to pick up on how the student learns? Are they able to cater the lessons to the student? Is the lesson enjoyable? Is the chemistry between the teacher and the student good enough so that the student can say "I don't understand" or be honest about their progress? Is the student retaining the information, or is it hard to understand? If the teacher is unable to learn the nuances of the student and what works for the student, it is likely they are unable to teach well.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what they want to get out of the tutoring lessons (i.e. specific goals: I want an A in the class or I want to write great scholarly essays). They should also think about trying out a few different tutors so as to not limit the scope of their research. Having a few different tutors administer a first lesson can help them compare and contrast to come to the decision that makes sense for them.
