About Alyssa

I am currently a PhD student studying Higher Education Administration. My master's degree was in Student Affairs in Higher Education, and I have 6 years of professional experience working with and supporting college students. In addition to this experience, I have worked for preschools, and studied K-12 education in my undergraduate degree. I am passionate about learning, and I strive to help students see the joy in learning, solving puzzles, and interacting with the world around them.

I can tutor the following subjects:

-Spanish courses at any level from grade school through 400-level undergraduate courses

-English usage, mechanics, and writing

-English as a Second Language

-APA writing styles and citations

-Pre-Algebra and Algebra I

-Introductory music theory and how to read musical staff

To me, learning is about much more than just passing classes. It is about developing an appreciation for the world around you, building real-world skills, exploring career and personal interests and hobbies, and so, so much more. We know that students are best served when they have positive relationships with their teachers and are met with individualized interventions based on their own needs and interests. I strive to develop positive rapport and a fun and educational environment to meet goal-oriented learning outcomes.

I started working at daycares and preschools when I was in high school, and knew then that I wanted to teach. I then studied Spanish Education in college and discovered that while I love teaching at all age levels, I have a special passion for working with college students. I then pursued an MA and PhD in Higher Education, and hope to one day teach Higher Education master's students.

I am a Ph.D. Student in Higher Education Administration, but I also have an MA in Higher Education and an undergraduate background in K-12 Spanish Education. I also have experience working in preschools.

I prefer to spend the first session identifying the student's goals and needs, getting to know the student's current skill level and interests, and establishing a timeframe for the completion of tasks and semester-long goals.

I have experience with students of all age levels-from pre-k all the way through graduate school!

Ask questions and make sure you are comfortable not only with credentials, but with the teacher's personality. In one on one tutoring, your relationship with the tutor and responsiveness to their teaching style is hugely important.

My dog has discovered a love for playing in the sprinkler this summer, and it has been a unique joy for me to watch her and take videos of her.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-Think about teachers that you have learned a lot from. Can you identify a few reasons why you learned a lot from them? How is that different than teachers who you did not learn from?

-What ways do you learn best? Some options might be reading a book, listening to a lecture, writing a paper, giving a lecture, discussing the material with your peers, doing independent research on a topic, hands-on experience relating to the topic, or something else. The potential answers to this question are unlimited, so really take some time to reflect on this.

-Not a question, but a reminder. Your high school classes and college gen eds are not always "necessary life skills," but they are meant to help establish career and personal interests, and teach you HOW to learn. This way, when you go on to college or start your major courses, you are prepared to learn and retain the information that you WILL need long-term. As humans, we never stop learning--at jobs, in interpersonal relationships, watching the news; knowing HOW to learn is a vital skill.
