About Katherine

My experience in writing and reading really helps me instruct students in improving their composition and creative writing skills.

I love both written and spoken words, and have been writing since I was 10 years old. I write short fiction, poetry, essays and memoirs. Since I started playing the guitar a few years ago, I have also been doing some songwriting.

I also love to read all sorts of books, including classic and contemporary American and English literature, biographies, memoirs and nonfiction on a variety of topics.

I have a B.A. degree in Secondary Education with a double major in English and Psychology. After graduation, I first worked at a child care facility in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, working with emotionally disturbed children and adolescents, until I found a job teaching English in grades 9 - 12 in Freedom, Wisconsin.

I then moved to Portland, Maine and earned an Associates Degree in Allied Health Science in the area of Respiratory Therapy. I worked as a an RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) for the next 35 years in the states of Maine, Florida, and back in Wisconsin.

I am proficient in spelling, grammar and usage, and medical terminology. My background in English education and healthcare has helped me tutor students in general writing composition skills as well as writing for health and science topics.

I retired a couple of years ago, and find tutoring is a great way to use my life experiences and education to give back to the world, which has been so generous to me.

I love the variety of people I get to work with, from school-age to adults, students in classrooms and lifelong learners, too. And because I love language in general, I get much satisfaction helping people with words in any form, written, spoken, and sung. 🎶

I have been a teacher since I graduated with my degree in Secondary Education. Throughout the years I have instructed people in every position I have held, not just as a teacher in the public school system, but also in my work in the healthcare field, and as a child care worker.
Along the way, I have also tutored many friends, children of friends and members of my family in their writing studies and projects.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education, with a double major of English and Psychology from the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire.

I have an Associates Degree in Allied Health Sciences in Respiratory Therapy from Southern Maine Community College in Portland, Maine.

I also have a Baking Certification from the culinary program at Fox Valley Techical College in Appleton, Wisconsin.

I have done quite a bit of traveling, made wedding cakes for several years, and enjoy cooking, bicycling, gardening, crafting, and reading and writing. I think these life experiences have all contributed to my work as a teacher.

I like to have a short meeting to get to know the student, and to learn why the person needs a tutor, and what he or she hopes to learn from me.

I also like to talk to the person to explore how the student feels he or she is best able to learn, and what ideas, questions, and fears the student has about the subject matter.

I have instructed elementary and secondary school students, as well as adults in English language basic grammar, syntax, and usage, composition, creative writing and literature.
I have taught nurses and respiratory therapy peers in respiratory and cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology, and respiratory therapy procedures and pharmacology.

I would suggest that you look for a tutor who has solid educational credentials, as well as someone whose bio suggests experience working with a variety of age groups, backgrounds and temperaments. I would also hope that the bio would help you understand if that person is one of integrity and compassion.

I got great satisfaction from helping a good friend compose a letter of intent as part of her application to a nursing program, to which she was granted admission.

I also enjoyed editing my older brother's first novel.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, I would tell the student to ask himself why he feels he needs help learning the subject. What specifically is he or she having difficulty understanding, for example, is it the vocabulary (not knowing the meaning of words), or having trouble understanding the ideas or processes he or she is trying to learn, or finding it hard to express oneself by writing or talking about the subject.

I would also say it's important to ask yourself, what fears you have, not only about what you are trying to learn, but also about the learning process in general, and about talking to the tutor, as well.
