About Matthew

There is always another way to look at something. There simply are no "dumb" or "smart" people. Each of us is a brilliant, creative, expressive person. Period. We are fundamentally different in how we view the world and how it works, yet those differences are exactly why we can come together and create change to make lives easier for others and ourselves. One of those differences is how we learn new things. It may feel like someone is "naturally gifted" when she learns a new instrument in an instant. What we fail to see are the many factors that lead to her doing so, including past experiences, perspectives, and skills. Maybe she spent a lot of energy listening intently to music as it played in the past, and so her brain was more ready to build the instrumental knowledge to match what was already there. Maybe her brain made sense of the music in a mathmatical sense: the ratios between beat note intervals were steps of a ladder in her head as she recognized patterns. Or maybe she focused on the emotion of the music; sees it more as self expression and invention, curious as to how changing the music changed her emotional response. My varied experiences in life taught me many, many things. Just how I am a sum of my own parts, I see how knowledge itself is an aggregate just the same. We all understand in our own unique way, yet we are inevitably tasked with learning in measurable outcomes. By carefully leveraging different perspectives, different learning styles and different curiosities: each of us can unlock the path forward.

I feel extremely rewarded during that moment where I see something just "clicks" with someone I am working with. A.K.A. the "A-ha! moment", etc. It is a very common feeling and saying, but I think it is very understated in how we think about learning. That moment usually comes when we can "connect the dots" between what we already know, and what we're trying to know. The "these things really aren't so different" feeling. We can hitch on new knowledge to previous learning to save ourselves from starting from scratch on a new topic as there are inevitably many similarities. Other times, it could come in a more systematic way. E.g. if you understand principles of sociology, learning a new social phenomena can fit within existing frameworks. No matter the mechanism, these moments will at all times produce a brand new point of understanding from which we can learn even more. From a chemical perspective, these are literally synapses creating new connections based on certain brain activity. What I enjoy most about my work is when we understand how to understand, and it produces obvious results.
