About Tom
Tom Bernett has five decades of professional experience as a drummer, as a vocalist, as an entertainer, and as a producer of audio, video, and live events. He is known as a quality musician who can play any style, and for his unique ability to play and sing complex drum and vocal parts at the same time.
He has traveled extensively throughout the United States and southern Europe; has backed internationally known stars; and his drum students have been accepted at many leading music colleges.
During his five decade career he has worked in USO shows, traveled with top-40 show bands, played in dinner theater and regional theater pit orchestras, worked in commercial recording studios, toured with the American Cavalcade of Big Bands, backed internationally famous entertainers, and in recent years as a drum teacher, has had students accepted at Berklee College of Music, Indiana University School of Music, Appalachian State University School of the Arts, and University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
His recent jazz drumming credits include shows with Grammy-winning jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan, trumpet innovator Charles Lazarus, jazz vocalists Marlene Ver Planck and Melva Houston, and New Orleans trumpet phenom Shamarr Allen.
He started teaching at the request of a neighbor shortly after relocating to North Carolina in 2003. Since 2010 he has operated a music teaching studio in downtown Southern Pines, NC,, where he teaches beginner thru advance adult drums. He also teaches chord-based piano and basic music theory to beginners of all ages.

I offer a free first lesson so that students/parents can get to know me and experience my teaching method and approach to students. This also gives me a chance to evaluate potential new students' aptitudes in a penalty-free setting.
I teach drums to students ranging from beginning children to advanced adults.
I teach beginning chord-style piano and basic music theory to beginners of all ages.
I teach low brass to beginners thru intermediate students.
It is important to enjoy learning. Remember to consider your prospective teacher's demeanor and personality in addition to their skills and experience.
One student recently won a full scholarship to a college music degree program. Several others have been the recipients of a memorial scholarship from their high school. And I especially like the hugs I often get from the youngest students, which tells me they are enjoying their time and experience in my studio.

Details
Lessons are 30-minutes in length. Fees are $35 per lesson, payable in advance by the month. Some lesson materials are printed out in the studio and provided to students free of charge. Purchase of a lesson book (Amazon) is usually required after a beginning student reaches a certain level of proficiency.
