About Matt
I have experiance working with individuals who have never painted before through those who are more seasoned and looking to refine their art practice.
As an instructor at a university, I can help those who may be looking to refine their portfolio for their undergraduate or graduate application, or students who may be seeking guidance on their AP or IB Studio Art exams.
I also maintain and active painting practice myself, and pull from that in my teaching style.
I love seeing the progress that students make in their work, helping individuals challenge themselves to grow their artistic practice, and helping students look at the world in new ways.
I love teaching art as much as I love creating art. Art is a medium of expression as much as it is a way to understand and interpret the world around us.
I worked as a teaching assistant in graduate school, and after that, I realized how rewarding it is teaching art, and decided to pursue it as a career.
I have a BA in Studio Art from the University of Puget Sound, and and MFA in Painting from Boston University, and 2 years of teaching experiance working as both a teaching assistant and an adjunct college instructor. I current teaching introduction to painting at MassArt.

When working with a new student, first I connect with them to find out what their goals are for our sessions. Then together with the student we develop a lesson plan or outline with objectives and goals to meet along the way. I ask to see previous work, and ask what challenges they are facing and what improvements they'd like to make. I tailor my approach for each individual and their unique goals and learning style.
I work primarily with undergraduate students, but I have also worked with young children in after school art classes and with young family members learning to paint and draw.
I'd encourage you to seek out a teacher who will work with you where you are and show you how to lean into your strenghts. With art, I often go back to basics and foundations, but my philiosphy is that there is no right or wrong way to create art. It is my job to help you improve your own work, rather than mimic a specific style.

When you are are seeking art lessons or tutoring I think its important to consider: what are you goals, what do you hope to improve on, what are areas that challenge you, and where do you find inspiration?

Details
I charge by the hour and my standard rate is $35 dollars an hour. I ask that you pay $20 prior to the lesson to serve as a deposit. The remainder of your fee will be due at the end of the lesson.
You must cancel at least 24 hours in advance to recieve a refund on your deposit. If I'm unable to make a lesson due to unforseen circumstances, I will refund your desposit.
