About Lindsay
Encore Academy of Dance has built a reputation for excellence in dance education.
At Encore Academy of Dance we teach the whole dancer, physically and metally preparing them for a lifetime of learning and striving for the best possible version of themselves onstage or off.
Our dancers go beyond learning wonderful technique and poise to develop important life skills, learning to be respectful, confident and conscientious young people.
Encore Academy of Dance’s instruction program offers the largest selection of classes available in this area, catering to both students pursuing a career in dance and the recreational dancer, beginning as early as 2 years old.
Dance is a performing art! Our students perform in parades, festivals and at nursing homes in addition to our Annual Spring Performance; which attracts about 500 people annually.
Lindsay Tilley began dancing locally at the age of nine. She performed and competed on local and national levels, being crowned Jr. Miss Dance of the United States at thirteen. At fourteen, Lindsay left Durham to attend the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem as a high school ballet major. While there, she performed in many roles from classical ballet to jazz. During her high school years, Lindsay attended dance programs with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Hungarian National Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet, as well as professionally guest performing with the New Jersey Coastal Ballet. Upon graduation, Lindsay returned to the triangle to pursue professional dancing and teaching. She danced with the Duke University Dance Program, Chapel Hill Dance Theatre and the 15-501 Ballet while teaching in the Durham Chapel Hill area. Later Lindsay went on to join the Carolina Ballet as their first paid professional dancer. After enjoying three years with Carolina Ballet, Lindsay decided to start a family and return to teaching, becoming a member of Dance Masters of America and Dance Educators of America. While owning and teaching at Encore Academy of Dance Lindsay also teaches at many workshops and community events around the state, as well as teaching master classes for other studios in North Carolina. She spent 15 years teaching preschool, first at St. Luke’s Preschool and Kindergarten then at Grey Stone Preschool and Kindergarten. Lindsay is currently an assistant Kindergarten teacher at Excelsior Classical Academy. She is the mother of four very wonderful boys; Omar, Ayman, Ethan and Isaac.

I love the dancers, young and old. I enjpy getting to know each and every one of our dancers. They are all unique individuals, who bring such joy to our lives as instructors. I enjoy watching how the skills they are learning in dance are helping them succeed in school, music, sports and life. Everyone is special in their own way, and I love to see how their individuality shines onstage.
Children have always held a special place in my heart. When I was a young girl I thought I wanted to be a school teacher, then I began dancing. I started teaching dances classes first as an assistant while I was still in elementary school. I then taught classes for my peers during high school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts during our jury's (exams). After starting my family I knew I had to continue to share my love of dance with children and adults alike.

Before offering classes to a dancer or parent we like to talk with them to find out what styles of dance they are interested in or give them information regarding the classes we offer if they are not sure. This lets us know what their expectations are as well.
Dancers ages 3-7 are placed in classes based on their age. If dancers are 8 and over we bring them into a trial class to determine their level. Dancers attending a trial class for levels are placed in a class at a beginning level or lower. Our job at Encore Academy of Dance is to build self confidence, thus being able to move the dancer up in levels, not down.
I have worked with all types of students, from beginners to professionals alike. I have worked with all ages, male and female.
Do your research; learn about their background, performance experience, teaching experience, etc. Meet the teachers, talk with them, observe them teaching, take a trial class. Many teachers teach differently when they know they are being observed, so try to observe without an appoinment as well.
I am always proud of my dancers for their continued hard work throughout the year during the end of year Showcase. However, I am more proud of the little things they do that people don't always hear about. For example a small group of our dancers just collected items and performed at the Duke Children's Hospital. That to me means more than any big performance or competition they could ever win. Helping the community is so much more important.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If possible try to choose which style of dance you are most interested in. Ask the teacher about their dance background, where/what classes they took, what they learned, where/what they performed, etc. Make sure they are the most qualified person to teach you what you want to learn. If they aren't they should be able to help you find someone who will be.
