About Ayona
Throughout my four years in highschool I took part in a variety of leadership positions because I was on the executive board of clubs that I wanted to make a great impact on. I actually created a health sciences club during my junior year as well. Some of the clubs I participated in were key club, youth and government, special olympics, and peer tutoring. These four clubs were very important to me because they all helped me to make a positive impact on the students and faculty within my school. Key club was all about community/volunteer service, youth and government was about political elections and running campaigns, special olympics was about helping kids in need with sports that they never thought they would be able to play, and lastly, peer tutoring was about helping kids in my school with projects, homework assignments, etc. I played as a main part in each one of these clubs because my overall goal was to benefit my community and make the necessary improvements needed to keep each club running successfully. I volunteered through the Chicago Cares program in the summer of 2018 with Northwestern Memorial Hospital. This was quite an experience for me because it opened me up to different perspectives of life. We went to a school near the southside of Chicago and created a more fun learning environment for students who are less privileged than we are. We painted each classroom and went outside on the blacktop and drew out playground games like hopscotch and four square. I also volunteered at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital and the People's Resource Center (a food pantry) back at home. I am currently applying to volunteer at the Saint Louis University Hospital. I have participated in a few days of service for the Life Sciences learning community whether it was at a community garden or for MACURH, and these have made a large impact on me because I want to pursue more research in exploring a variety of opportunities whether it relates to my major or not.
I enjoy building relationships and making strong connections to the people I work with. These students always come to me for advice whether it is school related or not. I love getting to know new people and helping them with school especially. It brightens my day to see how excited a student will get after they finally master something that they have been struggling with.
I started teaching in high school through the peer tutoring program.
I was a peer tutor my sophomore, junior, and senior year of high school. I am currently a sophomore at Saint Louis University double majoring in Neuroscience and Public health, with a minor in healthcare ethics.

I usually would ask what they need help with and create a set plan that works for them. I plan my tutoring based on each student's needs and what would be most beneficial.
I have worked with all students, but mostly elementary and middle schoolers.
I would tell a student to pick someone who they feel comfortable with. Someone who can guide them in the right direction and help them whenever they need it. I feel like I am one of these people that have an open personality and am always spreading kindness. I want my student to ask as many questions they'd like until they feel that they have fully understood a topic.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should prepare questions that will help them in the long run. They should think about which material they need help with and specify what they do not understand. They should send me a list of questions before our session, so that I can prepare the lesson in advance.
