About Aratrik
Currently, I am finishing my MS in Biomedical Sciences and have a BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Delaware. I have tutoring experience which dates to 2012, where I tutored High School students from the Delaware Military Academy in topics such as Algebra and Calculus. The Delaware Military Academy is my Alma Mata and I was happy to assist the students who were troubled with their performance in their respective coursework.
During undergraduate, I began tutoring through the Biomedical Engineering Society, teaching Freshmen and Sophomores Engineering mathematics applied to Biomechanics and Biostatistics. Both courses are challenging because they require the student to apply their understanding of physical and biological phenomena and mathematics to solve problems related to the human body.
After graduating and starting my MS, I began by tutoring with A-Offer, a tutoring company which specializes in teaching English to students who are new to the language. Although it was very challenging at first, I developed an understanding of the student’s perspective, and tailored their learning with their perspective in mind. Over the course of the past year and a half, I’ve maintained a 5-star rating, and my students regularly attend tutoring sessions in the evening.
When learning sciences, it is very important to imagine/apply the phenomena being taught in the textbook. Sciences are all a consequence of physical/chemical properties and therefore it is difficult to learn much from the textbook. When I teach sciences, I tailor learning to the student’s current understanding of the topic to media, such as Khan Academy. By coupling learning with visuals and practical application, students can easily master the sciences. A student who has truly been able to master a topic should be able to write in detail, an essay about how a scientific property behaves and what further studies could be done within that field. For example, a student learning about the biology of cancer, should be able to define cancer, describe known treatments and argue potential developments in the topic.
To better understand the interface between medicine and engineering, it is imperative to immerse in both industries. I have volunteered for over eight years at the Wilmington Hospital’s Operating Room while assisting Perioperative Care Technicians. This opportunity has given me the privilege of observing surgeries in the OR, observing the use of a variety of medical technologies, shadowing technicians and surgeons, communicating with patients and developing a network within the hospital. It was strikingly amazing, observing surgeons, technicians, nurses, specialists and engineers work in tandem within a single OR for the sole purpose of treating a patient. It certainly isn’t a job for one individual and has for the longest, time inspired me to pursue a career in medicine.
My goal is to pursue an MD/phD in Biomedical Engineering so that I may investigate novel ways to treat and diagnose diseases. It is my belief that with better engineering, the medical field will be able to cater treatment to the individual with great precision.
