About Richard
No matter what you choose to do in your life, whether you are a performer, creator, laborer, leader, etc., studying Theatre Arts can greatly contribute to both one's specific path in life, and the path of a well-rounded individual. Study & practice of performing arts can add to any skillset, including but not limited to, the following:
Athleticism, through awareness & use of the entire body
Teamwork, through clearly defined roles and the combination of all these roles working together in a fast-paced or long-term project
Adaptability, through the "controlled chaos" of live theatre and the inevitable need to think on one's feet
Literacy & Critical Thinking, through analysis and deduction of a script to create a balanced, "human" character
Inter-Personal Communication, through diction, posture, and emotional understanding
Compassion, through analyzing a character's actions, words, and emotions to "look through their eyes" and deduce individual motivations
Leadership and Followership, through respective roles in a performance project, and the respect and commitment required on both sides to produce a performance
Public Speaking, through diction, posture, and understanding & interacting with an audience
My name is Richard Alcott. I studied Theatre Production, Directing, and the Stanislavsky Method of Acting for twelve years under the late Rosann Weeks at Dreamchasers Theatre Arts, Inc. I have also spent twelve years contributing to many of the New England community theatre companies in the northern MA/southern NH area, as an actor, director, stagehand, dramaturg, and house manager. Currently, I am a Member-at-Large on the Board of Directors for Ghostlight Theatre Company of NH.
I am a licensed Assistant Teacher in MA, working for the Lextended Day program in Lexington. On the thespian side, besides my two dozen combined years of experience, I have been awarded Excellence in Acting & Excellence in Directing, and have directed recipients of Best Ensemble, Excellence in Acting, and Best Production at various NH Community Theatre Association annual festivals. I am also a founding member of both Theatre Sports Improv of NH, and the comedy group Spontaneous Hilaritus.
A well-run theatre production, where everyone contributes their best and works with each other's bests, creates a play that is greater than the sum of its parts. In this mundane world, it's always beautiful to see such magic.
The same magic is present when a person (child, or child-at-heart) has the critical moment when all they've learned fits together like a puzzle, and they "cross the bridge" between being a performer playing a character, and an actor BEING a character.

About the lesson

With typical acting lessons, I begin with basic theatre knowledge, including staging, theatre terminology, and a summarized history of Western theatre.
I then select a piece for the student to memorize & analyze under my direction. With multiple-student lessons, a scene or short play will be picked instead of a monologue.
The goal for the first few lessons is for the student to be able to deliver their piece with a carefully crafted, well-rounded character.
Goals for other fields of instruction may be discussed at the arrangement of said lessons.
