About Maddie

Take private voice and performance from fully certified Somatic Voicework(tm) instructor Maddie Tarbox.

Maddie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre from Weber State University and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from the University of Central Florida. She received her certification in Somatic Voicework (tm) - The LoVetri Method from Shenandoah Universtiy in 2013 and has been teaching private voice and performance techniques in varying styles for nearly a decade maintaining a studio of over 30 students ages eight and up.

Maddie has a great passion for sharing the foundations of functional singing propelled by vocal science to those eager to learn. Watching students grow, develop their technical skillset, and discover the power within their own voices is one of the great joys of being a teacher. Develop your range, muscular control, register balance/extension, and vocal health all while learning to meet the industry standard of singers today. Now accepting beginner, intermediate, and advanced vocalists. Anyone can learn to sing, and everyone has room improve!

In addition to Maddie's vocal training, she has an extensive acting and teaching artist background, having the opportunity to work with various theatres including Orlando Repertory Theatre, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Peery's Egyptian Theatre, and Centerpoint Legacy Theatre where she has taught classes ranging from "Intro to Acting" to "Improv" to "Audition Techniques for Stage and Screen" to a full fledged "Musical Theatre Intensive" course.

"The performing arts have changed my life. I truly hope to inspire trust, confidence, and a greater capacity for human compassion in each student the way my incredible teachers have done for me."

My mother is a phenominal voice teacher. I have been surrounded by music for as long as I can remmeber, therefore I picked up the passion for vocal education fairly young.

EDUCATION:

BA in Musical Theatre - Weber State University - Ogden, UT

MFA in Acting - University of Central Florida - Orlando, FL

Fully Certified in Somatic Voicework (tm) the Lovetri Method - Shenandoah University - Winchester, VA

VOCAL TRAINING OVERVIEW

Somatic Voicework (tm) - The LoVetri Method - Jeanie LoVetri - Private Studio (NYC)

Fitzmaurice Voicwork - Kate Ingram - University of Central Florida

Estill Methodology Levels 1 and 2 - Tara Snyder - University of Central Florida

Intensive Classical Vocal Study - Evelyn Harris - Private Studio (UT)

Proficient in Piano (can comfortably accompany students).

In addition to this formalized education, I have spent years performing professionally for companies throughout Northern Utah, Central Florida, and Washington D.C. Performing experience includes roles such as Jo March (Little Women), Franca (The Light in the Piazza), Fosca (Passion), Hedy La Rue (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying), Rosalee (Sleepy Hollow), and an invited guest appearance singing Glitter and be Gay with the Weber State Symphony in 2012.

On top of performing and private lessons, I have enjoyed nearly a decade of work as a professional teaching artist with such companies as Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Orlando Repertory Theatre, Peery's Egyptian Theatre, Centerpoint Legacy Theatre, and Interact Story Theatre working with students of all ages to develop their craft as young performers and story-tellers. I love nothing more than watching these students grow into professionally minded performers, using their skills to better the world around them.

In a first vocal lesson, I like to take the time to get to know the student, their goals, and where they feel like they are currently comfortable vocally. We will then take some time, through vocal-training warmups, to get on the same page with some common vocal terminology (breath support, registers, chest voice, belt, mix, head voice, tonal resonance, etc). Through this we will identify the student's vocal strengths and areas with room for improvement. When the formative assessment is complete, there will be time available to work on specific songs and pieces focused towards strengthening vocal functionality while offering a fun area of focus for each student!

In addition to technical vocal study, students can have the opportunity to learn and grow as actors. With a Master of Fine Arts in Acting I feel strongly that a story with clear choices should drive any performance. Students can learn to utilize acting techniques such as imagery work, action "verbing", character analysis, etc. to prepare them for a performance and/or audition. We will work together to prepare clean, clear, confident performances/audition packages to help the student feel more at ease in front of an audience.

I have worked with students ages eight and up, ranging in talent levels from beginner (never having sung outside of the shower before) to advanced (musical theatre professionals and students in the university setting).

Styles taught within in the studio vary greatly. I confidently work with singers interested in jazz, classical, musical theatre, belt, pop, rock, gospel, and folk.

Additional experience in working with special needs students.

Do your research, and try out several teachers for a lesson or two! Find out who YOU gel with best. You will quickly discover those with whom you resonate most.

I had the opportunity to teach a Musical Theatre Intensive course to 25 students this past summer in which we worked on songs from Dear Evan Hansen, On Your Feet, and Cats. Watching the students perform each song, so varying in style, feeling empowered by what their voices were capable of (both technically and metaphoricaly) was inspiring. It is the very reason I do what I do.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
