About Cathy
I have taught the Alexander Technique (AT) since 1994 and been a training course Director at SLCityAT in Salt Lake City. I have the expertise to guide you on your path to improved health and well-being. Whether you want to improve your posture, reduce chronic pain or improve your performance, I can help you turn off your unwanted habits and turn on consciously chosen, healthier ways to live your life. The AT teaches you how to do everything you do BETTER.
My sub-specialty is teaching performers of all kinds; singers, dancers, instrumentalists, actors, yogis, as well as sports athletes; equestrians, skiers, cyclists, tennis players, runners. I also work with parents, kids, seniors, knitters, fine artists, healthcare workers, computer professionals, and more.
If you live in a body, I can help you to live in it more harmoniously with grace, power, and coordination. My many years of martial arts training in Aikido informs my teaching. I use the Aikido principles of being centered, sensing, connecting and blending to help you learn how to make your everyday movements more dance-like- flowing, easy, and free. The old habits of lugging oneself around with effort and heaviness fall away and you begin to transform into a better version of yourself.
I love the Alexander Technique( AT)! It is a powerful set of tools for helping people realize the positive changes they desire in their lives. There has been nothing more gratifying than witnessing the confidence and joy my students find after a course of lessons in the AT.
I have always been ‘a mover’; as a child roller skating, skateboarding, bicycling, dancing, skiing. As an adult, adding on to the list of outdoor activities. Beyond seeking fun, I have developed a keen interest in the art and physics of movement, and the philosophy of learning. Why do some people ‘feel’ more at home in their bodies, more confident and coordinated? And vice versa.
I have decades of experience teaching the AT to all ages and occupations. I keep my lessons fun, lively, humorous. I encourage and empower my students. After taking lessons, most people have a profound sense of feeling grounded, open, lighter, and calmer. Sign up for one lesson or a package of lessons. Let’s work together, so that you can learn to live in your best body!

I offer on-line lessons in the Alexander Technique. My primary role as your Alexander Technique Teacher is to guide you in learning to improve your 'use'-how you carry out your everyday activities- with less pain, more ease, and improved coordination.
Together, we learn to identify habits of movement or mind that are working against you. Once you become aware of how you are walking, sitting, playing an instrument, riding a horse, or anything else, we can choose the best way to carry out your activity. I call it 'organizing your effort'. I will guide you in learning to accomplish your goals by observing and asking you to move or think in particular ways that create less effort and more ease in your body. Continued coaching by me and on-going practice by you will allow the new ways of moving and thinking to take the place of the old, unwanted habits of tension and excessive effort. It's easy to learn, often with immediately noticable, positive changes!

“I live with Rheumatoid Arthritis and I’ve worked with Cathy for the last 16 years. She has helped me cope with recoveries from 5 arthritis-related surgeries over that time period. She has helped me to immediately find relief from muscle pain, headaches and has taught me how to move through my life with so much more ease physically. The work I’ve done with Cathy has literally changed my life.
“I am also a singer and a voice teacher. I’ve hired Cathy many times to teach workshops for my voice students. I’ve watched them open up their voices in ways that not much else would have been able to do for them. She is very fun to work with, makes the technique incredibly accessible and truly invests herself in the education of her students. She has a genuinely positive approach that brings people into a better way of using their bodies from the moment she begins her work with them.
“I live in Utah and so with her recent move to the Northwest, I’m definitely missing her, but yet have such a great understanding of what she taught me, I know that I will be ok no matter what comes up for me and my body down the road.”
“Cathy will change the way you use your body – which will change your life! Not only did she correct my posture, she also helped improve my speaking voice, mobility, and comfort. Alexander technique is something everyone needs. Awareness is so essential to feeling healthy and energetic. Cathy is the best! As a classical singer, I have worked with many Alexander technicians. Cathy Pollock is truly amazing! Her gifts of insight and healing are second to none!”
“Your posture on the ground is your posture in the saddle.” So many riders are not advancing because of their lack of understanding of their own “use.” I see riders who are not aware of their habits struggling week after week with their horses, while not addressing the real issue which is incorrect “use.” I really believe A.T. will result in real riding breakthroughs for most riders.”
“The Alexander Technique has made my viola playing, professional life, and my private teaching much easier and more enjoyable. It has given me tools to adequately assess my own habits of tension, make corrections based on those assessments, and those of my students. I strongly believe that the Alexander Technique has a place in every music curriculum.”
“There are teachers, and then there are teachers with insight and the capability to inspire and open up the world; Cathy is in the latter category. She makes the A.T. so accessible and easy to apply to my life. Studying with Cathy has improved my own teaching; I have improved my communication, and hence my problem-solving skills with my voice and piano students. Understanding the A.T. in my own body better enables me to understand it in theirs. Cathy’s skills rank up there with the east and west coast big-city Alexander teachers and at a fraction of the cost!”
“I was immediately attracted to Cathy’s vibrant, positive personality. She is encouraging, motivating and very accessible as an instructor. Over the years, she has taught my students, as well as other voice students at the University of Utah, many master classes, as well as private lessons. I witnessed huge growth in my students once they began working with Cathy.”
As a music teacher in Bend for 37 years, I had some chronic tension in my shoulders as well as headaches. After having just a few Alexander lessons, I began to use my body so efficiently and easily that my tension and headaches were gone and I was filled with energy. I love the way I feel! People always tell me I have the most graceful posture and they don’t realize it’s from the Alexander Technique. I cannot say enough about my lessons with Cathy Pollock. She is a complete professional with a very gentle touch and many wise words to lead the student down the path to wellness.”
My posture and overall body alignment was much improved. This also gave me greater body awareness of how I move.
Life changing, helps me move with greater ease in daily life
It freed my body to do things with more ease.
A herniated disk in my upper back left me with extensive pain from the neck through my arm, hand and back. I was scheduled for surgery but wondered if there was another way? After unsuccessful sessions in massage, yoga, Rolfing and acupuncture, a Feldenkrais practitioner recommended I talk with Cathy. That suggestion changed my life. The pain started to subside by the second session. The Alexander Technique is now integrated into nearly everything I do from skiing, sailing and hiking to working at a desk, driving a car, even getting out of bed. I have been working with Cathy now for over 10 years and the benefits just keep coming!
Cathy is amazingly intuitive about individuals and their needs. She worked with me about walking more comfortably (which seems simple, but is not) and about playing music. I'm a guitarist and posture was giving me some issues with shoulders, etc., and the work with Alexander Technique was transformative.
She is also great at explaining the why behind what you are doing, so it becomes easier to apply the techniques to other tasks. She's a good communicator and works well both in person and online. Alexander Technique is good stuff.Cathy helped me with rehab after a neck injury. The Alexander Technique and Cathy's expertise enabled me to recovery and return to my sport. I really enjoyed working with Cathy. She is knowledgeable answered all of my questions and is a fun and personable instructor.
Cathy is compassionate, accessible, clear and responsive - I found these to be just the right ingredients for mind-body education. She offers simple step-by-step guidance that is pleasurable and gets right to the heart of the problem. You will learn so much about yourself - how stress negatively impacts on postural balance, freedom of movement and ease. With Cathy, there's nothing but sound advice that's long lasting with no bull. It's worth every cent you pay.
Cathy is very intuitive , she understands my body needs, restrictions and strengths. Her work feels effortless yet has profound changes in my body. She finds restrictions that I’m unaware I’m holding onto and moves them through to a better body position. Her depth of knowledge and experience are obvious in her work . She understands my physical limitations and works gently and intuitively with them.
Cathy is an enthusiastic teacher who is both inspiring and supportive. She is able to demonstrate and facilitate the technique to our class in a fast paced and supportive way that is truly invigorating!
The Alexander Technique continues to help me move with ease in my daily life and in my weaving craft. Cathy's experience and insight into what is needed is amazing.
