About Gemma

Hi, I'm Gemma!
I’m a qualified primary school teacher based in Melbourne, with over 8 years of classroom experience supporting students in their learning. I now specialize in 1:1 literacy intervention, helping students build confidence in reading, writing and spelling (and showing them that it’s not as scary as it sometimes feels!).

I moved into tutoring because I love being able to slow things down and really meet students where they’re at. In the classroom, it’s easy for students to slip through the cracks, but in a 1:1 setting, we can take the pressure off, go at their pace, and celebrate the small wins (which often turn into big ones).

My teaching is grounded in structured literacy and evidence-based practices, but I also make sure sessions are engaging and supportive. There will always be encouragement, plenty of 'you’ve got this' moments, and the occasional laugh along the way!

I pride myself on being professional, reliable and easy to communicate with. I work closely with families so everyone feels confident about the progress being made, and so you’re never left wondering what we actually did in a session!

About the lesson

My teaching approach is highly individualized, structured and evidence-based. I specialize in literacy intervention, using a structured literacy approach (such as Multi-sensory Language) to explicitly teach reading, spelling and writing skills. This includes breaking learning down into clear, manageable steps and using repetition, modeling and guided practice to build confidence and independence.

I draw on techniques aligned with the Science of Reading, including phonological awareness, systematic phonics instruction and explicit teaching of sentence and text structure. I also incorporate hands-on and engaging activities to keep students motivated, particularly for those who may feel discouraged or overwhelmed by learning.

Lessons are typically 50 minutes and are tailored to each student’s needs and goals. Sessions usually include a mix of review, new learning and supported practice to ensure skills are retained and applied.

I am a qualified primary school teacher with over 8 years of classroom experience, and I now work as a literacy intervention teacher and disability support worker. I have experience supporting students with a range of learning needs, including dyslexia and other learning difficulties, and I prioritize a neuro-affirming, strengths-based approach.

My lessons are designed for early years and primary school students, particularly those who need extra support with reading, writing and spelling, or who benefit from a more personalized and supportive learning environment.
