About Steve
Six years ago I walked into a climbing gym alone, convinced I needed to be incredibly fit and athletic just to get started. I'd always seen rock climbing as this extreme, intimidating sport reserved for a certain type of person. Turns out I was completely wrong, and that surprise is what got me hooked.
Once I was actually on the wall, I realized climbing is far more about problem-solving and technique than raw strength or fitness. Anyone can do it, and that realization stayed with me.
This year I started introducing others to the sport, and in a short time I've already brought over 30 complete beginners onto the wall for the first time. Most of them came in with the same doubts I had, and left with the same look on their face I probably had on mine.
I hold a South East Asia Climbing Federation (SEACF) Level 2 certification, which covers lead climbing and belaying competency. For beginner coaching, my certification and hands-on experience give me a solid foundation to guide you safely and effectively from day one.
I'm based in Penang and offer in-person sessions at local climbing gyms, small group classes, and online technique coaching for those who want structured feedback on their movement. Whatever brought you here, I'm happy to be your first step into the sport.

I still remember the first time I got on a wall, equal parts terrified and hooked. That's exactly the feeling I want to share with people who've never tried climbing before.
I've brought over 30 complete beginners into the sport, and every session I focus on one thing: making sure you leave feeling capable, not overwhelmed. Climbing has a reputation for being intimidating, but most of that melts away once you understand the basics and trust your feet.
Each session is 1.5 hours and we cover the things that actually matter when you're starting out, top rope climbing, bouldering and basic movement techniques. By the end you'll have a real feel for how climbing works, not just a taste of it.
For in-person sessions, we meet at a climbing gym here in Penang. Shoe rental and day passes are available at the gym and are not included in my fee, so just budget a little extra for that. For group sessions, bring a few friends along, there's something about cheering each other up the wall that makes the whole thing click faster.
For online coaching, it works a little differently, you record yourself climbing and send me the footage, and I'll break down your technique, spot what needs work, and give you a clear action plan to improve. It's a great option if you're already climbing but want a proper eye on your form.
No experience needed, no gear required to get started. Just show up curious and we'll take it from there.
