About Dan
I’ve loved the saxophone for as long as I can remember, and having been introduced to piano and recorder at an early age was very fortunate to be given a saxophone and receive lessons from the age of 10. But it was a truly inspiring year 8 school trip to London’s Royal College of Music that confirmed for me the dream of being a professional musician. Ever since then I’ve been totally driven to be a top class pro sax player, and along the way I’ve come to realise the joy of sharing that passion through teaching. I love teaching. It is one of the most fulfilling things to see a student overcome a challenge, learn a new skill or gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the music they love. The people you meet and friendships you make in working on music together are also second to none.

I am a professional saxophonist, experienced instrumental tutor and jazz educator. Graduating from Leeds College of Music in 2012 with a BA in Jazz, I have spent a musical lifetime devoted to the pursuit of excellence in jazz performance and built a professional career that has seen me perform and educate widely in the North of England.
I have maintained a healthy roster of private students of varying ages, abilities and ambitions for the past 15 years. I was the saxophone tutor at Artforms’ North Leeds Music Centre from 2013 to 2021, and spent 2 years teaching ensemble classes for Jazz At Heart (beginning 2019) before deciding to offer my tuition on a solely private basis. I nevertheless strive to offer all my students the music school ‘feel’ and sense of being part of a supportive learning community by putting on regular concerts/social events for my students to gather and perform together.
In my years teaching I have, among many other things: coached students with conservatoire ambitions, introduced players to the richness of the jazz tradition and the art of improvisation, overseen students develop from complete beginner to confident player and helped students to proactively overcome performance anxieties and other challenges.
It is of utmost importance to first understand the specific goals and further ambitions of the student as well as how they respond to certain forms of teaching. Once this is understood I begin to teach using an exciting, thought provoking and challenging selection of repertoire and a wide range of immersive practical exercises. Extra materials are given and further tasks to be completed between lessons are set at regular intervals. I strive not just to aid the tutees' progress with the subject but also to provide them with the universal skills of study, helping them to become well equipped, efficient and focused learners. I offer both 60min and 90min lessons.
