I truly believe the best way to teach something (especially confusing technical information or DAW work) is by getting on the students' level. In particular, communicating in a way that is relatable, rather than more "know-it-all", always results in a better outcome. These lessons are for anyone who wants to improve in the area of music production.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

"It's hard to say when I first developed a passion for music-I mean, as a child I loved listening to music, but at the time I didn't really realize I could create music too. As I grew older, I began to respond to the rhythm of music a lot. I would often be tapping on anything nearby, just to play a little beat with my hands, when most of the time I didn't even know the words to the song I'd be listening to! After getting on my family's nerves for too long (whoops! haha) they decided I needed an outlet. So, they purchased a pair of congas for me and I began to learn my first instrument. Over time, I transitioned from congas to timbales and finally to the more common drum kit, loving every step along the way. So, while at this point I play multiple instruments and produce with a computer, my favorite instrument has to be the drums. :)"
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

"As I've gotten older, I've actually learned to love a lot of different kinds of music. I think back in the day I was a little one-sided, liking the music I liked and pushing everything unfamiliar to me away. But over time, I learned to love listening to stuff that's different, and now it'd be pretty hard for me to pick an all time favorite genre. However, I will list a few artists that feel timeless to me (even though there are many more than this): Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Prince, MGMT, Foster the People, Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, … the list goes on!"
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

"This may not be the most difficult to me, but something that I think a lot of beginners might struggle with is the concept of timing/groove. Coming from a drumming background, I think there's a certain way you can look at timing in music that helps a lot of things to make more sense. It definitely comes with time and repitition, though, and it's something I work on with all of my students! I specifically like to work with people to visualize the 'grid', and the concept of beat divisions. I think once you have a firm grasp of this, you can inject so much more emotion into your music."
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

"I guess I'd have to pick something other than drums, since drums were the thing that made the most sense to me right off the bat. I think it's very different depending on the person, but for me, my weak link (out of the "main" instruments typically discussed) would be guitar. I've got some experience playing bass guitar, keyboard, and drums among other instruments, but guitar is one that I still haven't really spent a ton of time learning. It would be super useful though! I guess in terms of non-traditional instruments, I've heard they can be much more difficult (like the sitar for example)."
  • What are your keys to success?

"Practice and passion. One drives the other and it's an endless cycle. If you truly enjoy music creation, you will inherently be practicing. Sure, you may need to guide your practice and focus on certain specific things, but as long as you're repeatedly doing something musical, over time it will undoubtedly pay off."
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

"Well, this is a hard one. I don't know how well I can really answer this one, but three musicians that would be a dream to meet in person would be: George Daniel (drummer for The 1975), Kaytranada, and Fred Again.. They're all making waves as producers and performers, and I would love to pick their brain about their music creation processes. But honestly that's just the first 3 people that come to mind! I could keep going! Lol"
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

"One time my band opened up for Soulja Boy at a small college music festival… Definitely different genres but so much fun! Haha he showed up late because he wanted to make sure he had a bus that would let him smoke in the vehicle during the 1.5 hour drive from the airport to the show. But once he got on stage it was quite the performance!"
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

"I think the thing that makes me stand out compared to other teachers is that I can get down to your level. I don't teach like a know-it-all-I'd much rather have it feel like I'm a peer, sharing knowledge with you in a way that's both understandable and relatable. I know it's hard to explain, but I think it's all about communication between the teacher and student, and I think that's my specialty!"
