About Jerrard
I’m a mature-age science student at Swinburne University of Technology, currently completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics, with minors in Astrophysics and Higher Mathematics. I bring a friendly, patient, clear, and adaptable teaching style focused on building confidence and deep understanding in math. I’m a native English speaker living in Melbourne for 6 years, but originally from Scotland - don’t worry, I have a clear, understandable accent! My experience - 1+ year professionally tutoring Preliminary Mathematics (MTH00007) students at Swinburne University of Technology, covering content closely aligned with the VCE curriculum. - 3+ years of teaching and mentoring experience from previous ESL teaching roles in Japan, China, and Spain. - Proven ability to build rapport with learners, adapt teaching to different learning styles, and make complex concepts more accessible. - Comfortable teaching one-on-one, with flexibility to develop group sessions upon request. - Experienced in delivering remote lessons using digital tools. My tutoring services and rates - introductory offers! I specialize in tutoring VCE Foundation Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics. I tutor at flexible times, including evenings and weekends, and have a standard rate of $60 per hour or $70 per hour for Specialist Mathematics. I offer a free introductory, half-hour consultation session to meet students (and parents if you like!), discuss goals, set expectations, and demonstrate how I teach using one of the student’s own example problems. The first full session is only $50! Group sessions may be available upon request - please ask. Teaching philosophy I returned to study physics and math after a long break myself, and I understand how challenging math can feel at any stage - and how satisfying it can be when you learn how it works! I strive to create an environment where there are truly no silly questions, and where students feel comfortable and supported as they progress in their math journey. Who I tutor I welcome not only high school students for VCE math subjects, but also tertiary and other post-secondary learners who study math for personal interest or professional development. For these students, I am happy to provide highly tailored lessons suited to their individual goals - the same free consultation and discounted session apply. Approach to lessons I offer remote tutoring with interactive lessons, digital note-taking, and session recordings for later review. My approach uses visual, verbal, and practical methods tailored to each student’s pace and goals. I value diversity and inclusivity, drawing on my multicultural experience and language skills to connect meaningfully with students from all backgrounds. Diagnostic testing! I can offer a short diagnostic assessment (paper or online) to identify strengths and areas for improvement, enabling me to tailor lessons precisely to the student’s needs. Alternatively, students are welcome to provide a recent homework or test covering a broad curriculum for targeted tutoring. Additional services! Beyond math tutoring, I can provide help and support in Physics, Astronomy, English (language or literature), Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese language studies.
