About Khelina
was born and grew up in Tallinn, Estonia, then went on to study mathematics at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. What followed was 28 years teaching mathematics at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, one of Russia's leading technical universities. Then, in 2017, I made a decision that surprised almost everyone who knew me: I gave up a settled academic career to chase a PhD scholarship in machine learning, at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. I finished the PhD in 2022, then stayed on for a further two years as a postdoctoral researcher.
These days I teach entirely online, working with students wherever they are. Whatever the setting — a lecture hall in Moscow or a video call to London — I bring the same thing to every lesson: real mathematical depth, paired with the patience that only comes from decades spent watching people learn.
I have a particular interest in supporting students through STEP, alongside A-Level and GCSE — the kind of exams where real problem-solving ability, not just formula memorisation, makes the difference. Having worked at both ends of the mathematical spectrum — foundational university teaching and cutting-edge machine learning research — I know exactly where students tend to get stuck, and how to get them past it.

Maths has been my life's work for nearly three decades — I started out teaching at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, before moving to Swinburne University in Australia, where students rated my teaching 9.21 out of 10. I cover the full spread of university-level maths: calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, multivariable calculus, vector analysis, probability, and statistics — whatever your engineering, physics, computer science, or maths course throws at you. I also prepare students for GCSE, A-Level, and STEP.
Every lesson is one-to-one and built around you — no rushing, no moving on until a concept has genuinely clicked. In my experience, students who believe they're "just not maths people" usually just haven't had it explained the right way yet. I like to see you actually solving problems as we go, so I simply ask you to point your phone or tablet camera at your notebook during the lesson — no special equipment needed, and it lets me catch and fix mistakes the moment they happen, rather than after the fact.
Lessons run 90 minutes — I've found 60 isn't enough time to properly explain something, work through examples, and be sure it's landed. Longer, less frequent sessions tend to get students further, faster, than short weekly check-ins.
