About Hamilton

I am a graduate in Electronic Engineering and have been teaching Mathematics since 2016, having taught and tutored many students with great success. Due to my experiences as an Examiner for Edexcel and IGCSE/A-Level teacher, I am well-versed in preparing students towards their final exams. My aim is to boost my portfolio as an educator by teaching and tutoring students of varying backgrounds and abilities, under different environments and teaching platforms.

Having taught KS3, IGCSE and A-Level Maths at an international school for many years, I specialise in helping students prepare for Cambridge International and Edexcel exams. My lessons consist of a starter based on a previous topic or background knowledge needed for the new topic. Then I teach the concept, using visual aids and real-world examples so students understand how different concepts are related and how they can be applied to different situations. Afterwards, I provide students with an opportunity to practise what they have learned. If students are preparing for exams, the main focus of the lesson would be to teach problem-solving skills adequate for each type of question, review key concepts and provide exam-style questions for students to practise.

Find out more about Hamilton

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I´ve had an interest in Mathematics since I was a small child. I´ve always found logic in numbers and from there onwards, I chose to pursue a career in Mathematics, so after graduating in Electronic Engineering I decided to change my career path to teaching. From there, I started tutoring part-time which I´ve enjoyed doing since 2018.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Mathematics at a secondary school, including GCSE and A-Level. I'm open to discuss any topics any topics with students, particularly sports and retro gaming.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I did not have role models, although I was positively influenced by many people I came across, including my Sociology and Form teacher. He always gave me a helping hand when needed and guided me towards a career path which helped me be where I am today.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Good subject knowledge
    Being prepared for all lessons
Understand and relate to students´ struggles
Being able to communicate with students clearly
Patience when explaining concepts students are struggling to understand.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In a lesson where I was introducing students to algebra and the concept of adding a and b terms, I explained that 3a + 2b is not equal to 5, or 5a or 5ab since a and b are different things. To illustrate this, I explained that 3 apples together with 2 bananas does not make 5 "banapples", which made students laugh and from that moment onwards they did not make the same mistake.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Influencing students to enjoy and look forward to having Mathematics lessons, particularly those whose enjoyment in a subject is defined by their success.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

While I love Mathematics and teaching Mathematics to different sets of students, my passion is sports, particularly football and formula 1. From a young age, I´ve always enjoyed watching and playing football and supporting my club, Arsenal.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Being passionate about teaching and always striving to be better.
