About Emma

Hi, I’m Emma! I’m an experienced KS2 teacher with 10 years of classroom experience, including Year 6. I particularly enjoy working with pupils 1:1, where I can get to know how they learn and tailor my teaching to what they need.

In English, I particularly enjoy helping pupils develop the skills to become confident readers and writers. Whether we are exploring a text, developing vocabulary, working on comprehension or crafting a piece of writing, I aim to help pupils enjoy all that reading and writing has to offer. I also want pupils to understand how and why something works, so they can apply their skills independently and with confidence.

I chose to teach and tutor because I love the opportunity to work closely with individual pupils and see their confidence grow alongside their understanding. I offer daytime tuition and particularly welcome enquiries from home-educated and flexi-schooled pupils, as well as pupils who would benefit from additional support outside the classroom.

About the lesson

My English lessons are tailored to each pupil and their individual needs, whether they are developing their reading, strengthening their comprehension, building vocabulary or working on their writing.

For reading and comprehension, we might explore a text together, develop fluency and expression, discuss unfamiliar vocabulary, make inferences and practise explaining ideas using evidence. I encourage pupils to think carefully about what they are reading rather than simply searching for an answer.

For writing, I focus on helping pupils develop their ideas and make deliberate choices about vocabulary, sentence structure and organisation. We might analyse examples, plan ideas together, practise a particular skill and then work towards applying it independently.

I also revisit and consolidate previous learning so that new skills have a chance to become secure. Lessons are calm, encouraging and purposeful, with plenty of opportunity to practise while gradually building independence.

My aim is for pupils to become more confident not only in English itself, but in expressing their ideas and knowing how to approach something when they don't immediately know the answer.
