About Kathryn
Hello! I'm Kathryn, and I'm passionate about helping students discover their potential in History. There's nothing more rewarding than watching a student's confidence grow as they master a difficult topic or achieve the grade they've been working towards. I achieved an A-Level in History and have been tutoring for several years, working with students from KS3 through to A-Level. My approach combines detailed subject knowledge with a genuine understanding of exam requirements - I know what examiners are looking for and how to help students deliver it. I'm particularly proud of my track record with students. Recently, I helped a student improve from a grade B to an A* in just two months through targeted feedback and exam technique practice. I've worked with students of all abilities, from those struggling with basic concepts to high achievers aiming for top grades, and I genuinely enjoy helping each student find their own path to success. Currently, I'm completing my PGCE at UCL Institute of Education, which means I'm training in the latest teaching methods whilst actively tutoring. This keeps my approach fresh, evidence-based, and closely aligned with current exam board requirements. I understand the pressure students face and work hard to make lessons engaging, supportive, and productive. What sets me apart is my ability to tailor lessons to each individual student. Some students need help with essay structure, others with source analysis, and others simply with understanding complex events. I take time to understand where each student is struggling and focus our lessons on what will make the biggest difference to their grades. I'm patient, approachable, and committed to helping every student I work with achieve their goals. History doesn't have to be about memorising dates - it's about understanding causes, consequences, and connections. Once students grasp that, everything else falls into place. If you're looking for a tutor who genuinely cares about your progress, understands exam requirements, and has a proven track record of helping students improve their grades, I'd love to work with you. Let's get started on your History success story!

Teaching Methodology: I use a structured, exam-focused approach that combines building genuine historical understanding with mastering exam technique. Each lesson is tailored to the individual student's needs, learning style, and target grade. My methodology focuses on: Active learning - students engage with sources, debates, and historical questions rather than passive note-taking Detailed feedback - I review students' written work thoroughly, providing specific guidance on how to improve Exam technique mastery - understanding mark schemes, examiner expectations, and how to maximise marks Building confidence - helping students develop their own analytical voice and trust their historical judgement Structured progression - each lesson builds on previous knowledge with clear learning objectives Typical Lesson Structure: Lessons are typically 60 minutes and follow this format: Review (10 mins) - check understanding from previous lesson, answer questions New content or skill development (25 mins) - teach new topic, analyse sources, or practise exam technique Application (20 mins) - student practises essay writing, source analysis, or exam questions Feedback and next steps (5 mins) - discuss progress, set homework, plan next lesson I also offer 30-minute lessons for quick essay feedback sessions or targeted exam question practice. My Qualifications and Experience: A-Level History (grade B) - strong academic foundation in historical analysis and essay writing Several years of tutoring experience - worked with students from KS3 through to A-Level Proven results - helped students achieve significant grade improvements, including one student who went from grade B to A* in two months Currently completing PGCE at UCL Institute of Education - training in latest teaching methods and pedagogical approaches Detailed subject knowledge - confident teaching most popular GCSE and A-Level topics including Nazi Germany, Cold War, Medicine Through Time, American West, Elizabethan England, and modern British History Who My Lessons Are For: My lessons are suitable for: KS3 students (Years 7-9) - building foundation skills in historical analysis and essay writing GCSE students (Years 10-11) - exam preparation for all major exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) A-Level students (Years 12-13) - advanced historical analysis, extended essays, and exam technique Resit students - those retaking exams and needing targeted support to improve grades All abilities - from students struggling with basic concepts to high achievers aiming for top grades I particularly enjoy working with students who: Need a confidence boost in their historical analysis Want detailed feedback on their essay writing Are preparing for mock or final exams Need help mastering source analysis questions Want to understand difficult topics more clearly What Students Can Expect: ✓ Patient, encouraging teaching that builds confidence ✓ Clear explanations of complex historical concepts ✓ Detailed, constructive feedback on written work ✓ Practice exam questions with mark scheme guidance ✓ Personalised resources tailored to their exam board ✓ Regular progress tracking and communication ✓ Flexible online lessons via Zoom or Teams My Teaching Style: I'm approachable, patient, and genuinely passionate about History. I believe every student can improve their grades with the right support and targeted practice. I tailor each lesson to the individual student, focusing on their specific weaknesses whilst building on their strengths. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all teaching. Some students need help with essay structure, others with source analysis, others with simply understanding the events. I adapt my approach to what each student needs most. Homework and Resources: I provide students with: Personalised revision materials Practice exam questions Essay plans and writing frameworks Source analysis techniques Mark scheme breakdowns Homework is set after each lesson (optional but recommended) to reinforce learning and give students practice applying new skills.
