About Imogen

I am a published novelist and Writer/Director with an MA in Scriptwriting from Goldsmiths, University of London and a BA in Philosophy and English Literature from the University of Sussex. Since January I have been working with Manning's Tutors, where I primarily tutor GCSE English Language & Literature to pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, at more affordable prices. In taking on work with Superprof, I hope to expand my tuition to A-level and undergraduate English, as well as creative writing consultancy.

I have always been an avid reader and writer, and was lucky to have English teachers at school who encouraged me in these areas. Seeing the written word primarily as something to be enjoyed, studying it never felt like a chore! I believe that an understanding and enjoyment of English Language and Literature can be life-affirming for so many, and opens up creative avenues for those who wish to express their ideas through writing. My primary goal in tuition is to be able to enrich my students' connection to literature, which can be a powerful tool in coming to understand oneself and the world better.

About the lesson

I tutor English Literature and Language from KS3 right through to degree level, either one-to-one or in small groups of 3-4 students. My approach is focused primarily on what the student feels they need help with at that moment in time, whether that's understanding a poem better or brushing up on their writing skills. There is no task too big or too small to focus on in tuition, and I will always adjust my tutoring techniques based on the specific needs of the student(s).

In the past, students have particularly enjoyed having in-depth discussions about the texts they are reading in class and analysing them together, and I try to break lessons up into different sections (sometimes with a presentation, a quiz or a game) to keep students engaged. For me, being a great tutor is really about being a good study partner, encouraging and motivating students to face challenges, feel comfortable with the material and most importantly to find fulfilment in their study of English.
