About Dr Dan
Hello! I'm Dan, an English Literature specialist with a BA (Hons), an MA by Research, and a PhD awarded by a Russel Group university.
I've spent over a decade thinking deeply about the impact literature can have on readers and on the world. My work on George Orwell has been published by Cambridge University Press, and I recently published a scholarly book: activities that have trained me to explain complex ideas and help my students build arguments they genuinely believe in.
Alongside three years of tutoring, I also spent five years in the corporate world as a professional content and grants writer, which allowed me to further hone my ability to communicate with precision and (when the occasion demands) a little panache. Throughout these experiences, tutoring has remained my first passion: I love helping students discover that English need not be about guesswork or analysis without purpose, but about learning to think clearly and critically.
As such, I work hard to teach students how to form real views on the texts they study. Whether we're working on Shakespeare, Victorian fiction, modern drama, or poetry, my goal is always to demystify mark schemes and help students build perceptive analyses around the real ideas they hold. Working with me is all about helping students feel in control of their exams.
I teach English Literature across GCSE and A-Level, spanning all major exam boards (Edexcel, OCR, and AQA).

My teaching style is rooted in demystifying the curriculum and helping students form genuine opinions on the texts they study.
English is notorious for perceptions of its subjectivity, and it can be intimidating to approach exams uncertain about what assessors are looking for. That's why my sessions engage openly with the five assessment objectives, constantly drawing and re-drawing the line between each learning activity and the tangible, grade-boosting objective it relates to.
That doesn't mean my students get bogged down in formula. My extensive academic training and background is built on the idea that well-rounded, enthusiastic understanding and analysis comes hand-in-hand with forming real opinions on the texts under discussion. Whether it's Macbeth or The Sign of Four, a poetry anthology or A Christmas Carol, my classes prompt students to uncover the assumptions and contexts underpinning these texts and build structured, perceptive arguments around the viewpoints they develop session by session.
A representative session structure might look like: a brief recap, a focused skill aligned to a specific assessment objective, a short piece of writing, and targeted feedback. I prepare materials in advance in the form of extracts, exemplar paragraphs, and planning templates, all tailored to the relevant exam board and individual goals.

I have had the pleasure of being Daniel's friend and colleague for a number of years. He has a calm and methodical nature which I have found highly conducive to learning. As well as being a wealth of knowledge and expertise, Daniel is articulate and friendly in his teaching, making every conversation with him an engaging and enjoyable one. I couldn't imagine a better teacher.
I met Dan nearly a year ago through work, and we have since become great friends.
Having worked closely together, Dan is an incredible communicator - translating ideas that are quite complex into manageable sized chunks.
He has a wealth of knowledge not just from previous teaching but also from a wide range of literary classics!
Whenever I’ve asked him questions, he has never been judgemental, and explains concepts with clarity and precision.
Dan is patient, kind, and always happy to help - I highly recommend him!I am proud to have worked alongside Dan both in student outreach in a university setting, and later on as marketing professionals together. Dan is a diligent and engaging speaker and educator whose passion for sparking enthusiasm in students and helping demystify academia and exams really stood out to me. I have witnessed Dan's previous tutoring lessons where students have significantly increased in confidence and understanding of what is needed over their time with Dan, and his pragmatic and encouraging approach to tutoring truly fosters growth, curiosity, and engagement with the curriculum and the wider world of literature.
