About Matthew
Students have written me many thank-you cards over the years, expressing their gratitude for the mathematical progress and confidence they have gained. I have seen over and over again how good teaching shifts a student’s perception of their mathematical confidence.
From experience, I know that it is crucial to create an atmosphere in which the student feels comfortable expressing themselves and making mistakes. Creating this positive environment enables the student to actually enjoy their learning. My tutoring always starts from understanding exactly what the student needs and then quickly adapting to meet their learning requirements.
I enjoy teaching students of all abilities. I love the moment when we find the hidden treasure that is the precise mathematical connection that no-one has ever told a student they are missing. That moment when they say to me, “Oh! Now I get it.”
Over the last ten years, I have taught students maths from age 11 to 18, years 7, 8 and 9, GCSE and A level. I have built up a deep understanding of the sort of things students find difficult and therefore need help with. I have through hard won experience learned better ways to explain and foster understanding with almost every topic in the school maths curriculum.
