About Alice

I began teaching at the start of 2020, and have since found a genuine joy in working with my pupils to help them achieve their goals. I have found my experience as an actor helps me communicate online, especially when it comes to more daunting subjects such as Shakespeare: texts that can seem so dry on a first read, but come to life when engaged with properly. I am proud to say that my pupils regularly report deeper understanding of such classical works. Above all, I try to inspire a love of literature: a connection to the humanity of the stories, the beauty of the language, the power of words and their effect on the world. My lessons typically last an hour, though am happy to range them between half an hour or two hours. I pride myself on accommodating for dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety or other needs, always aiming to help you develop both confidence and enjoyment in your work.

I offer a detailed and extensive knowledge of the canon texts and curriculum specifics required by AQA and Edexcel, and three years of tutoring experience. In language lessons I focus on technique and essay writing; so the structure of the lessons partially follows the lit example below. For literature, there are two different courses of action. If you already have a working knowledge of your exam texts, then our lessons are typically structured thus: Lesson ONE Overall discussion of the text/key themes/your opinion and any particular ways you have identified you prefer to learn - ie. do you need regular breaks? Visual aids? Homework in addition to your school homework? I draw up a mini curriculum - a plan of action - for the proceeding weeks, so we know what to follow. Lesson TWO: Key theme 1. I identify a theme likely to come up in the exam. I present you with key extracts, key quotes to save for later revision purposes, and any relevant context. Usually I speak on it for about 20 minutes, often in the style of an essay ie. contrasting readings of the theme, and my personal conclusion. Then there is time for any questions/discussion. For the next 30 minutes, I then take one aspect of essay writing - ie. How to make a good point for your paragraphs - and we practice it in relation to the theme we've covered. The proceeding lessons follow this format. Lesson THREE: Key theme 2 Essay Writing Technique: What makes effective evidence? a good quote? Lesson FOUR: Key Theme 3 Essay Writing Technique: Analysis - how to pin point specific aspects/techniques to unpick Lesson FIVE: Key Theme 4 Essay Writing Technique: incorporating context and/or affect on reader Lesson SIX: Key Theme 5 Essay Writing Technique: Introductions Lesson SEVEN: Key Theme 6 Essay Writing Technique: conclusions The above can be done in less or more detail depending on how confident you are. Once the first text has been covered, the next two texts take up less time, as I then aim to cover about 2 themes a lesson, with 20 minutes to practice writing at the end. Should you be less familiar with the texts, then I advise we begin with a guided reading/analysis approach. Lesson ONE: a summary of the text - key points, characters etc. FOLLOWING LESSONS: close reading of significant passages in chronological order incorporating analysis/context as we go. My expertise: I have a First in English Literature from Exeter university, and throughout my degree focused on Shakespeare and 19th Century Literature, with an especial interest in the Gothic. Note: I have also academically read and analysed Lord of the Flies, Never Let me Go and Animal Farm. If you are studying a text I have not examined, I will take time to read and analyse it to an academic level before we begin. Additionally, I am a professional actor, and able to approach the modern drama texts both as a scholar and a theatre maker, having studied most of them in my drama training. NOTE: the website won't let me upload a sample lesson link, so here it is if you're interested: (concealed information)
