About Rory

Award-winning Eton & Oxford graduate with extensive international experience: I have taught hundreds of students from over 60 countries. My expertise spans a wide range of curricula, age groups, and student needs—from young learners to university students, whether they are mastering basic language skills or preparing for advanced examinations in English, French, Spanish, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

Teaching, for me, goes beyond simply imparting knowledge; it’s about inspiring a lifelong passion for languages and fostering a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and classical literature. Beyond enhancing understanding, confidence, and enthusiasm for language learning, I aim to instil qualities that extend well beyond linguistic education. This includes developing their ability to communicate effectively, think critically, appreciate cultural nuances, articulate thoughts clearly, and apply language skills across various contexts.

In addition, I specialise in guiding students to secure places at the world’s most prestigious schools and universities, focusing particularly on UK institutions such as Oxbridge and the Russell Group. With extensive experience in mentoring, I prepare students for success in their academic endeavours and future careers.

My students’ achievements reflect my commitment: all have met or exceeded their target grades, with some improving by as many as five grades. They frequently gain admission and scholarships to leading schools and universities worldwide, and many have received recognition for their outstanding accomplishments, including top placements in national language competitions.

I believe that many students encounter difficulties in language learning due to overlooked gaps in essential skills. Traditional classrooms often rush through foundational elements like vocabulary expansion and grammatical structures, leaving students reluctant to seek help for topics perceived as ‘basic’ or because teachers may not provide in-depth explanations. This challenge is prevalent across all ages and proficiency levels in English, French, Spanish, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

To address this issue, I begin by evaluating and strengthening each student’s core abilities in vocabulary and grammar. With a robust foundation established, we can progressively delve into more complex language aspects in an engaging and comprehensive manner. As students advance, our focus shifts to reading and analysing literature, which not only enhances their understanding of the language but also exposes them to cultural and historical contexts. We also concentrate on developing strategies for tackling exam-based essay questions effectively.

Throughout the learning journey, I prioritise genuine understanding over rote memorisation. I encourage students to explore the intricacies of grammatical rules and the richness of vocabulary, fostering a deeper appreciation for the language. Engaging with literature allows them to hone critical thinking skills and interpretative abilities, essential for articulating well-structured arguments in essays. Drawing on my extensive experience with exam preparation, I ensure students are well-equipped to express their insights clearly and confidently under examination conditions.

Lessons are interactive and student-centred, involving activities that broaden vocabulary and clarify grammatical concepts until students achieve moments of realisation and confidence. Rather than lecturing, I pose thoughtful questions that guide students to uncover and address misunderstandings independently. With over a decade in education, I have refined my teaching methods to balance adaptability—tailoring lessons to individual needs—with a coherent and structured learning path. My diverse background and interests enable me to incorporate rich literary and cultural references, sparking curiosity and motivating students to delve deeper. My ultimate goal is to empower students to take ownership of their education, fostering independent learners equipped with the language skills necessary for success.
