About Wendell

My undergraduate degree in anthropology was earned so I'd be able to travel to do ethnographies as well as desert area archaeology. Egyptian civilisation was and remains to me the most desirable speciality. Political realities and a less than ideal professional relationship with the Egyptian government and officials granting the permits and other things required in order to do this sort of work there, prevented me. Also I'd thought that living ethnographies in the Andaman Islands would be rewarding on multiple levels. Again, unfortunate political realities connected to both the United States and Indian governments made this plan virtually impossible. After several months of meeting with and discussing it with my professors it became clear that this course of action was simply not going to work out. After some time surfing with old friends in California, Mexico and Florida, some of whom had more education and experience than myself, I entered and completed an MA- TESOL graduate school program at UCF. My goal had changed from going to Egypt and the Andaman Islands to obtaining this MA geared toward my enjoying a life of surf trips and teaching ESL and ESP to pay for it. After obtaining the MA in (2001) I got an attractive job offer from a school in Japan close to many good and consistent surf spots. I lived and taught English in Japan for six years. During that time (2002-2008) I came to prefer ESP and goal oriented English students and contracts more than others. There is a sense of purpose and satisfaction in seeing students reach their goals or at least coming close which is sometimes absent in other kinds of ESL work. My surfing lifestyle drove me to leave Osaka in late 2008 and try to maintain my ESL teaching career. It has not been possible to live solely from my English teaching here. I've tried several other ways to earn a living including substitute teaching since 2019 in the DOE school's Windward District venues with some success. Covid-19 precautions by the DOE here have taken that source of income away from me. Last month I was called by T-Seas DOE line and given a week of special education at the Kailua Intermediate. There have been no more offers from T-Seas since then. Hopefully I can rally and do tutoring and online teaching and mentoring in the near future.

About the lesson

The Natural and Communicative Approaches. Students or administrators provide me with the student's goals and hopefully an evaluation has been done to refer back to during the course of lessons. If not, I can usually manifest things to a good conclusion.

Rates for online webcam lessons are $40.00 US dollars per hour. Lessons requiring my leaving home and held at another venue are $100.00 in advance.
