About Ben
Hi, I'm a tutor of English and Maths, based in Clapham. I’ve been tutoring for the last seven years, on this site and with some of the best professional agencies in London.

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh, where I studied English Literature from 2010-2014. I also have a Cambridge CELTA teaching qualification, and have taught English as a foreign language in the UK and abroad.
In the past seven years, I have worked with students of all different abilities, helping some to push for A*/Level 9 grades, and others to raise their grade from a fail to a pass.
This experience has given me a great awareness of the areas that different students find difficult, and the best ways of tackling these specific problems. When taking on a new student, my first task is to assess their current level and the style of teaching that will most benefit them.
I can then tailor my lesson around their needs, to make sure they are engaged and motivated by the subject. My lessons are always personalised on an individual basis, and I’m constantly looking for new and innovative methods of teaching, to find the best way of connecting with each individual student.
I really believe in the power of tutoring to boost a young student’s confidence, and help them find their potential. I think that this original and personal approach has helped my students to achieve highly at school and for their exams.
My goals as a tutor are:
1. To motivate my students and raise their belief in their own ability
2. To ensure they have covered the syllabus and achieved a thorough understanding
3. To support and encourage their independent study skills with revision plans and techniques

Having studied English at university, I'm passionate about sharing my enthusiasm for the subject.
Of course, English is a critical part of the curriculum, and a necessary qualification. But it can also teach key skills that will serve students in their other subjects and throughout their lives.
Many students nowadays struggle with the distractions of phones and social media. I place a big emphasis on the importance of regular reading. Without this, it's very hard for students to learn to appreciate subtleties of language, and to express their ideas clearly.
I always encourage students to talk about what they're reading outside the classroom, and to look for the ways that language is used all around them.

Perfect! Patient and adaptable
Ben tutored my daughter in both English Literature and Language. A few weeks after she started her lessons with him, her results and confidence in English have raised. Unfortunately she was preparing for her GCSE when Coronavirus happened. Then, Ben has been very adaptable and patient considering the situation, switching to on-line lessons, starting preparing her for the next step and trying to motivate her hence the very difficult situation. I am extremely grateful for Ben's commitment.

Perfect! Helpful and amazing tutor
At the start of year 11 my son was predicted a 6 and a 7 in english langauge and literature. After contacting Ben and arranging weekly sessions he helped my son with the parts he found difficult and increased his confidence in English. My son along with the help of Ben managed to achieve two grade 9s in english language and literature. He was also very kind and polite and i definetly recommend him for GCSE english.

Ben tutored my daughter in both English Literature and Language as well as Maths at GCSE level. He is an enthusiastic, hard working and supportive tutor who helped my daughter achieve 2 A*'s in English and a 5 in Maths. She had a very negative attitude towards maths in general and was at a grade 2 at the beginning of the year.However, with the hard work and dedication from Ben she was able to pass.

My teenage son has been very negative towards having a tutor so I took my time to find someone I thought would be a good fit.
