About Jamie
I'm Jamie, a 23-year-old tutor based in Aberdeen. Through 3 years' experience in tutoring, I have developed a passion for empowering students to take control of their own learning using a person-centred approach to teaching. I have a passion for English and have had my own writing published in the Glasgow Guardian, Poets For Peace International, Bonjour magazine and more, and graduated from Glasgow University in 2025. I enjoy challenging myself to make creative, engaging lessons, whether that be Jeopardy quizzes for Nat-5 English or acting out a scene for creative writing. My proudest moment as a tutor was when a student told me, "I'm meant to be studying, but instead I'm having fun" as we made spelling and English homework into a game and the student discovered that learning did not have to be boring.
I am particularly passionate about providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and working with students with additional support needs, whether this is neurodiversity, physical disability, learning difficulties or mental health issues. Over the years, I have worked with a wide variety of students with ASN, and work with the student, parents and carers to create personalised action plans and lessons, using a person-centred, neurodiversity-affirming approach to ensure that no needs are left behind and no student is ever left thinking that they are not enough. Moreover, as an LGBTQ+ person myself, providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ students of all ages is very important to me, and I make sure to teach in an LGBTQ+-affirming manner, taking into account the unique experiences of being LGBTQ+ within the education system.

I adapt my lessons for you and your needs - the 'default' lesson time is one hour, but longer or shorter is also available if desired and students are always encouraged to take breaks if/ when needed. At the core of my practice, I prioritise supporting students' social and emotional development alongside learning, so in lessons I get to know you and how you learn and use this knowledge to cater to what works for you, whether that be flashcards, discussions, a round of Jeopardy quizzes, or more. I build time into the end of every lesson to reflect on achievement, areas of growth and (if applicable), feedback to parents/guardians. As a tutor experienced in ASN, I am also able to deliver lessons to nonverbal/semiverbal students, using tools like digital whiteboards and websites to ensure student interaction, while monitoring body language to sense a student's mood.
I also offer a free 45-minute 'trial' lesson so that you can see whether I am a good fit for you. In this lesson, I often focus on getting to know the student and what brings you to English lessons, and allow room for you to ask me anything you may wish to, and allow room for collaborative feedback and discussion at the end about next steps.

Jamie tutored my son for his Nat-5 examinations. During his time with Jamie, my son’s confidence improved significantly and he gained confidence asking questions in lessons and putting his hand up in class. This is all thanks to Jamie, who worked hard to make him feel confident and give him room to learn and make mistakes.
