Which techniques and approaches we use depends on the student’s preferences and skill level. I have many tools from which to choose, and especially enjoy the experiential approach. For example, one student may enjoy a discussion of the topic before getting started, another may want to dive in to a brainstorm or free-write, and a third may prefer doing a little research to inspire his or her writing. These are all equally valid and valuable ways to begin a lesson, and require the student be actively involved in the process from the get-go. Learning should be a pleasant adventure in discovery! I firmly believe in the "whistle while you work", spoonful of sugar practice. Because getting started with a task may be challenging to a student, I always try to help those I teach make a positive connection between the work and their passion. After that, we determine the purpose for your project, who you hope will ultimately benefit from the information you have to share, the best format for the job, and which resources you will use to develop your content. The rest is word smithery!
