About Joshua
I’m an experienced language educator who teaches both English and Japanese. I have more than 20 years of experience teaching English and over 10 years of experience teaching Japanese to students of different ages and ability levels.
I hold a BA in Japanese with a minor in Linguistics, as well as a university-level TEFL certification, and I have passed JLPT Level 2. I have also lived in Japan for the past 10 years, giving me extensive experience using both English and Japanese in professional and everyday settings.
My background in linguistics and language education has given me a strong understanding of how people acquire second languages. Whether I’m teaching English or Japanese, I focus on helping students understand patterns and concepts instead of relying solely on rote memorization. My goal is to give students practical tools that make learning a language easier, more effective, and more enjoyable.

I’ve been teaching English for more than 20 years, working with students of different ages, backgrounds, and ability levels. My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual goals, whether you want to improve your conversation skills, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, writing, or overall confidence in English.
I hold a university-level TEFL certification and have a background in linguistics and language education. Rather than relying heavily on rote memorization, I focus on helping students understand the patterns and logic behind English and develop practical strategies that make new vocabulary and grammar easier to learn and remember.
My goal is not simply to teach individual words and rules, but to give students the tools they need to become more confident and independent language learners. I aim to keep lessons practical, engaging, and enjoyable while helping each student make steady, meaningful progress.

Joshua is a fun and knowledgeable Japanese teacher. I studied with him, on and off, for about 2 years. He was very flexible with his schedule. He was always willing to arrange times that were really best for both of us. And his primary concern was undoubtedly how well each lesson went. Again, I felt he was enthusiastic, and, in addition to his fluency with the many different conventions of Japanese—ie grammar, pronunciation, sociolinguistics, kanji, Keigo, kenjogo, etc, he also had many personal examples of words, concepts, phrases, etc which aren’t rare, but they also might not be taught so often either. I picked up a lot of practical information and practice from Joshua sense!
I met Joshua during a language stay in San Diego, California, where I attended his English classes.
Joshua is a truly great teacher. I made a lot of progress in English thanks to him, and it was always a pleasure to attend his classes. He explains things very clearly and presents the lessons in a way that makes them easy and enjoyable to follow.
His classes were also very interactive. He encouraged everyone to participate and express themselves, which created a really positive and friendly atmosphere. He was always kind, funny and approachable.
Even outside the classroom, he was very friendly and always took the time to ask how we were doing or have a chat whenever we met on campus.
I would definitely recommend Joshua to anyone looking for a great teacher. He is not only an excellent teacher, but also a genuinely kind and friendly person.View more recommendations
