About Harvey
I’m an undergraduate student studying International Relations and Russian Language at the University of St. Andrews.
My motivation for tutoring is to raise money for volunteer work overseas. I wish to travel much of the world, working in both terrestrial and marine conservation, as well as human development and English language teaching. The money I receive at the moment will go toward a trip to Laos in December-January, where I will be teaching English to novice monks in the country’s capital.
My hobbies include boxing, tennis, reading and music. Feel free to ask anything else you’d like of me!

I offer the following lessons:
- KS2 to KS4 English Language
- KS2 to KS4 English Literature
- KS3 to KS4 History
- My speciality is essay-writing and prose development lessons, suitable for secondary school and A-level students - these may be applied to any or all of the subjects listed above, or simply focus on skill development.
My lessons are tailored to the individual needs that students have. They aim to provide interesting insights into key areas course material that students may be finding difficulty engaging with. Explaining tricky concepts and relating it to literature and language in a way that is accessible to all is a core foundation of my teaching philosophy. I’m a firm believer in informing students of the practical use of both English and History, and aim to use my relative youth to engage and relate to those who feel alienated from or disillusioned with the school environment.
Lessons span anywhere from 30 to 60 minute, and the content is roughly decided upon by the student (or their parents’) themselves. Once a broad consensus has been reached over the general direction we wish the pre-determined block of lessons to take, I formulate lesson plans and material for discussion (this will often be provided by the student if it relates to curricular courses). This is often the case with English Literature and History. English Language lessons take a slightly freer structure, with the majority of lessons centered around picking apart any number of texts and developing essay writing skills.
I also offer essay-writing lessons. These lessons take a very predictable format and are very well-developed. Students will typically submit to me several essays they have written previously (marked by a teacher) of varying grades and quality. I will draw distinctions between them and point out both the good and bad parts. From then on, we will work toward writing our own open-book essays on whatever subject matter is appropriate. If provided a mark scheme that the school uses, I will mark these essays according to that - if not, I will work on the basis of the essays previously submitted to me. The reason these lessons are successful is that they allow the student to constantly engage with me and ask questions as they write. I do not tell them what to write, but HOW to write it. During my school years, I found that there is a rather simple formula for constructing successful, A+ grade essays. If given enough time, me and the student can begin to develop their writing style, drilling down and ingraining the habit of point, explanation, evidence, link to essay question in an articulate manner.
