About Phil
I have many years of classroom experience, as a secondary school teacher of English as a second language. I live in north London, but I spent 20 years living in Japan, which is why I speak Japanese fluently. I love movies, music, books and watching football. I'm also an avid photographer and in the winter I do a lot of backcountry snowboarding.

I teach using a wide variety of methods, incorporating real world materials such as videos and news articles into my lessons, as well as a variety of topics. I aim to build fluency as quickly as possible to enable the student to do most of the lesson using only English, without too much reliance on technology. Although my professional background is working as a high school teacher, I have a lot of experience with students of all ages, including children as young as 3 years old. My adult students have included senior and junior staff of embassies and multinational corporations. I have vast experience teaching all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced students. I am happy to teach everyday language but I can also help students who have clear desired outcomes such as test preparation, academic or professional support.
