About Kara
I have spent sixteen years mentoring more than 610 programming students, many now senior engineers and technical leads. My background includes a career as a principal software architect designing systems handling billions of transactions. I hold a master's in computer science and have published on distributed systems. My students have joined startups, founded companies, and led engineering teams. I am skilled at helping developers transition to architectural roles. My teaching is characterized by high standards and deep expertise. I maintain extensive architectural decision records and case studies. Outside of teaching, I advise companies and mentor engineering leaders. I believe great software is built on great architecture.

My programming teaching is architecturally focused preparing students for senior technical roles. I teach distributed computing including consensus algorithms transactions and microservices. System design is taught through case studies of real platforms. I emphasize non-functional aspects including scalability reliability and security. Database design is taught at architectural level covering sharding replication and polyglot persistence. For technical leadership I offer mentorship in code review technical documentation and project estimation. I also teach DevOps including infrastructure as code and containerization. Every student works on a substantial design project from requirements to deployment.
