I believe in teaching from the ground up. A student needs to know why something happens and how. What the inner working is like to the compiler. Why a certain method is preferred over another. Critical thinking is a must in any programming environment and it cannot come about without proper guidance. Practice is the responsibility of the student but the teacher needs to provide a sound theoretical and practical basis to him or her.
