Rote learning is way outdated , once a student is given open space to express his/her thoughts on a topic , it gets clear that where they need improvement. Giving students time to think on topic is way more engaging and it becomes interesting for them to participate.
As I was teaching La Martiniere girls students in Lucknow , first I used to plot a story to make them understand basics then ask them questions to know what have they grasped and lastly giving proper notes of concept taught ... Then ask them to think where , how this concept is needed or derived from.
