About Hugo

I am a recent graduate from Durham university, where I studied and attained a high 2:1 in History. I've been tutoring and mentoring for the last 6 years, helping over 15 students reach their goals.

A-Levels:
History, AQA A-Level, January-April 2020:
• Luke from Tiffin Grammar School, six sessions.
• Initially Luke was struggling with his motivation and organisation, so we discussed the intrinsic value of the process of preparing thoroughly for A-Levels and the benefits this would bring to his personal development above and beyond the results, as well as organising the systems behind his studies.
• After this we primarily worked on his essay writing and exam technique. Firstly, to help him to write a 4,000-word essay and then prepare for the less formal examinations that he had to do (because of Covid-19).
• He achieved an A* in his 4,000-word essay, which helped him to secure his place at Cardiff University.

GCSE:
History, AQA GCSE, December 2020:
• Ella from Graveney School, four sessions.
• Ella wanted some guidance on how to structure essays for her mock exams after Christmas. More specifically, she was unsure how to write her introductions and conclusions in an impactful manner.
• We spent the four sessions looking at different questions that could come up in her mocks and structured answers to them, with particular focus spent on the introductions and conclusions.
• She received a predicted grade of 9 in History, after achieving high marks in her mock exams.

English Literature, AQA GCSE, September-November 2020:
• Nika, home-schooled, weekly sessions.
• Nika had recently moved to Nice, in France, and continued to study in line with the English curriculum through home-schooling. She was extremely capable and passionate about the subject, and mainly needed someone to help fine-tune her understanding of texts, essay writing technique and generally building her essay-writing confidence.
• Accordingly, we went through her set-texts in detail, adding to the material she already had on quotes, themes and ideas, and discussing it openly clarifying her interpretations, and how their authors’ used form and language to create meaning.
• We then put these skills into practice by practicing writing essays, firstly together and then in timed conditions.
• She will be completing her exams in the summer, but I am confident she will achieve top marks – her confidence and ability improved significantly in the sessions.

11+:
Mathematics and English Online 11+ material creator, November-Present, 2020-21:
• Create 11+ tuition materials for a tutoring company in both Mathematics and English.
• These booklets that I create cover all of the material that a 10-year-old will encounter in their entrance exams.
• After creating the booklets, I then film explanatory videos that clearly outline how to effectively answer the questions in the booklet.

Mathematics 11+ preparation, 2018:
• Alberto from Trinity Primary School, weekly sessions.
• Prepared Alberto for his mathematics exam. Alberto is very capable but he struggled to focus particularly since maths wasn’t his favourite subject. To build up his mathematics skills we initially identified the areas that he felt he wasn’t confident in, and then targeted them by practicing questions from those areas.
• In these sessions we played a variety of ‘games’ to make practicing the questions more enjoyable.
• Alberto’s mathematics ultimately improved and he went on to secure a place at Wallington Grammar School.

11+ preparation, 2016:
• Nathan, Bishop Gilpin Primary School, weekly sessions.
• I prepared Nathan for the 11+ exams, covering Maths and English but also non-verbal and verbal reasoning papers. He struggled in particular on the English and verbal reason papers, the sessions focused primarily on helping to improve those scores.
• Beyond going through the papers and practicing directly for the exams, we also did sessions dedicated to developing his reading ability and vocabulary. To do this, we practiced with his favourite Michael Morpurgo books to gradually develop the precision of her reading.
• Ultimately, Nathan successfully got into Wilson’s School.

University:
UCAS Personal Statements:
• Helped two students (Marcus and Luke) write personal statements for their UCAS statements on applications to English universities to study History and Economic, and Business Economics, separately.
• Both received offers from a range of universities (all Russell Group) and credited my work with playing a big role in strengthening their applications.

Essay-writing:
• Helped Harry, an undergraduate student at Cardiff University, with writing several first-year history essays.
• He was struggling with the structure and how to communicate his analysis clearly, but after my help managed to get strong 2:1 in all of the essays we worked on.

Oppidan Foundation, February-Present, 2021:
• Yasmin and Taif, Kensington Aldridge Academy, weekly sessions.
• In these sessions I was mentoring these two year 12 students on how to become effective mentors themselves, as well as supporting them in the general academic lives.
• Took them through several activities that prepared them to be a mentor and to help them achieve their own goals.
• Both feel confident that they can be effective mentors and have learnt useful life lessons.

Interview practice and rugby skills coaching, February-Present, 2021:
• Jake, Donhead School, fortnightly sessions.
• Initially in these sessions we identified what aspects of Jake’s life he would like to work on and it arose that interviews and rugby skills would be the focus. These sessions aim to build his own confidence and instil ambition, so that he can reach his full potential.
• In turn we have devised various activities that develop these skills in a fun but still effective fashion.
• Although we have only had a few sessions, I am very impressed by the progress Jake has made.

Durham University Mentoring Scheme, November-Present, 2019-21:
• Will, Durham University, monthly sessions.
• These sessions are focused on acting as a supportive figure at university for a younger student. Initially, the focus was on streamlining his transition into university, when he was a first year, but has evolved into supporting him in his history undergraduate degree, particularly through covid-19.
• Will is currently on track to get a 1st in his BA History degree and has thoroughly enjoyed university.

Sutton Grammar School Mentor Scheme, November-November, 2015-16:
• Sam, Year 7, Sutton Grammar School, weekly sessions.
• Sam started our sessions as a ‘disruptive influence’ in the classroom, distracting other students and not scoring very well academically.
• The focus of our sessions then was to instil an inner drive in Sam, help him to understand the intrinsic value of working hard and being a positive influence at school. Tied in with this was helping him to feel part of the community at school, finding responsibilities for him and generally making him feel included and welcome.
• Sam has gone on to become a leader amongst his peers and runs the school magazine.

Manor Park Primary, Reading sessions, 2016:
• Helped several Year 6 students with their reading skills, improving the speed and accuracy of their reading.
• Saw dramatic improvement in the ability of each.

I am a highly patient and motivating tutoring instilling long term development in the students I teach. I tutor students for all ages. Each lesson starts with a clearly set target, one decided on by the student themselves, with the lesson structured around that. I very much have a holistic approach in my tutoring, developing long term improvement in students by helping them cultivate their ambition and achieve their own set goals.
