About David
Dr. David Sowah-Kuma is a trained chemist, safety advisor, and an excellent researcher in analytical, environmental, physical and material chemistry. He is currently with Lambton College’s Applied Research and Innovation in the position of Research Scientist and Safety Coordinator, where he has been undertaking industrial collaborated research projects, in the area of water, bio-process and materials, leading research projects such as catalyst development and next generation green disinfectants. His previous years of research experience is backed up by many scholarly articles and excellent scientific publications in reputable scientific journals. Dr. Sowah-Kuma completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Saskatchewan under Professor Matthew F. Paige (Head of Chemistry Department), where he conducted research of fatty acids, synchrotron science applications, and synthesis of gemini surfactants that have potential to be used as drug-delivery agents, and other biomedical and agricultural applications. He also completed his M.Sc. in Chemistry at Queen’s University under Professor Simon Hesp’s research group conducting research in the rheological properties of asphalt binders and mixes. He possesses great exposure and experience in operating many analytical instruments such as: HPLC, GC, GC-MS, AFM etc.
Dr. Sowah-Kuma previously worked with the University of Regina as the Chemical and Laboratory Safety Technician/Advisor under the Health, Safety and Wellness (HSW) department. Where he holds experience in conducting safety training for student, staff and faculty. Conducting safety inspections, ensuring compliance with WHMIS/GHS/TDG legislation by working with stakeholders who use hazardous materials and assisting with laboratory risk assessments (safeguards, safety equipment, training, chemical storage, waste disposal, access/egress, PPE, maintenance records/logs). Prior to this position, he worked in Saskatoon for an analytical environmental global company, ALS Environmental (Australian Laboratory Services) in the position of Laboratory Analyst and Safety Coordinator and engaged in laboratory chemical analysis of soil and water samples and ensuring that safety policies of the company were adhered to.
