About Karl
I am a History and Politics graduate with a first class degree from Newcastle University. Working as a tutor within a subject area that I have a great passion in is most appealing. My degree has provided me with excellent research and analytical skills as well as providing solid communication skills and confidence with public speaking. I have developed a strong knowledge base in my subject area and would be eager to convey this to others.
History and Politics are a rewarding subject to study. Studying history allows you to develop an awareness of differing political, cultural, social and economic structures in past societies and their interrelationship. You learn to combine vigorous debate over questions of interpretation with rigorous attention to the source materials. Students learn to critically evaluate evidence focusing on identifying, analysing and interpreting information from a range of sources. History has taught me to form complex interpretations and assess problems in the light of considerable amounts of information, often conflicting. You learn to construct evidence-based arguments and form your own judgements and conclusions on particular events in history.
Studying Politics has given me a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of contemporary affairs and political processes. Studying everything from pressing issues of international crisis to the latest domestic political developments, you learn to combine research skills with competent team based and leadership skills. Studying politics teaches you about the ways in which ideas and principles are put into action; attitudes that can be useful in the workplace.
During my degree, I learnt to work well within a team-based environment. I effectively worked with a team of four to deliver an assessed group presentation on the future of the European Union as well as actively participating in Seminars and group discussions, presenting arguments to a wider audience. These activities allowed me to develop excellent verbal and communication skills that I could convey to fellow students looking to learn and enhance their teamwork skills. Participating in numerous debates and discussions has given me the experience in learning to communicate and build productive working relationships with fellow students. These experiences would prove vital when learning to tutor others, allowing me to have the confidence to work with students of a similar background to myself.
I am very good at researching issues in depth and generally see myself as an effective problem solver. My teaching style would be to focus on detail and not to gloss over potentially important information. My personal work style is to make lots of preparation and research before attempting an assignment. I often find that the research stage takes far longer than the actual writing stage. As a tutor I would advise my students to prioritise work and learn to deal with conflicting demands on a daily basis. This would prepare students for further more complex studies which are most likely to be faced at University level.
In summary, I am a creative person, persuasive and can teach others to work to targets whilst under pressure. Working as a tutor to other students requires an individual that is a good communicator, confident and very motivated. The role is multifaceted and would be challenging, elements that attracted me to this position, as no day would be the same. I am always eager to further study subjects that are of great interest to myself and I would enjoy conveying my knowledge in history and politics to others who are currently studying for examinations.
